[IMG] After Harbourboy posted Empire Magazine's top 100 list everyone pretty much agreed that the list was rather, erm, pathetic. The idea of the list was to inform avid game fans what is available today from their local store and what is worth buying. They failed on multiple levels. There were games, such as Halo 2, that had not even been released yet and so the consumer couldn't purchase them and the magazine couldn't possibly know if the game was good or not. There were games such as Baldur's Gate II and Planescape: Torment that, although were definite top-dogs, are not exactly available from local game stores since Black Isle has gone bust. There were games that simply should not be on the list such as Farcry, Final Fantasy Chronicles, The Return of the King, Silent Hill, The Thing and World Snooker Championship 2004 simply due to the incredible lack of quality and or pleasure that could be gained from those games. There were also amazing absences from the list such as: Starcraft, Fallout (they included Baldur's Gate II so why not Fallout 1 or 2?), or Sacrifice.

    --- --- --- --- ---

So here's the idea of this thread. Let's compose our OWN list of top 100 games.

I will keep a list of games, a brief summary of the games pros and cons and their nomination 'value' below the rules.

    --- --- --- --- ---

    Rules are as follows:

    1. Please provide nomination names in ALPHABETICAL ORDER and ITALICS for easy reference.

    2. ONE game - ONE nomination. Do not include sequels in a nomination unless you want to comment on the ENTIRE series and if so PLEASE state so.

    3. You MUST provide a small 'review' for each game you nominate - about 20-50 words, an essay if you want but do try to keep it short. List the pros and cons of the game please, not "it is good" or "it is bad" since that doesn't exactly tell someone much. Say WHAT is good about the game and WHAT is bad about the game.

    4. Provide the GENRE of the game and the SYSTEM(S) it is on.

    5. You can make up to and including 100 nominations ONLY.

    6. The game can be for any console or PC.

    7. Expansions are considered to be games on their own (so you could nominate Throne of Bhaal for Baldur's Gate II even if Baldur's Gate II had already been nominated), but will be valued at what EXTRAS they add to the game, not as the Game + Expansion as a whole new product. So only nominate an expansion if the expansion deserves merit.

    8. You must have actually completed the game from START to FINISH. Unless you disagree with the nomination, in which case you must have actually PLAYED the game a reasonable amount of time.

    9. If you agree with someone else's opinion of something that deserves to be on 'the list' then state so. If there is something that should be included that the person before forgot to mention, add it after the title. Use Ctrl+F to see if the game is on the list BEFORE you post please. (Use the whole name, e.g. not BG for Baldur's Gate and I use roman numerals for numbers: II = 2)

    10. If you disagree with a title offered, name the title and your reasons for it not being on the list. ALSO include where or when you stopped playing the game if you stopped playing before finishing.

    11. The game with the most nominations will be put at the top of the list yet the list is subject to change over time. A disagreement deducts a nomination (e.g. a game with 10 nominations and 2 disagreements will have a nomination 'value' of 8).

    12. I HAVE NOT PLAYED EVERY GAME MYSELF! I DO NOT KNOW WHAT PLATFORM EVERY GAME IS ON! I DO NOT KNOW WHAT GENRE EVERY GAME IS! DO NOT ASSUME THAT I KNOW THESE THINGS! PLEASE, PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES! NOT BECAUSE I AM A MEGALOMANIAC, BUT BECAUSE I WANT AN ACCURATE LIST! IF YOU FAIL TO FOLLOW THE RULES YOUR NOMINATION WILL BE IGNORED!

    13. Obey the rules! (Please :( )

    1 nomination for BG1

    Hmmm, how about:

    Project Gotham Racing 2 (XBox)
Race in a whackload of cities with a whole whackload of cars, all realistic and tuned properly. Graphics are simply amazing and will give you little goose-bumps everywhere - even on your feet! Truly an expierience that will change your life forever! :)

    BG2 (Pc) RPG
    Nuff said!

    Rise Of Nations (PC) RTS
With 7 ages (IIRC) and seemingly limitless tech upgrades and units, it really is an RTS that stands above the rest. Graphics are the best I've seen for an RTS, while still keeping the birds eye.

Stronghold (PC) ummm, RTS? I don't actually know what to classify it as.
With proper arrow volleys and catapults (no more unlimited boulders to hurl), not to mention pretty much everything you can think of that's medieval, not to mention a rather hilarious in-game clock and calender which, based on time, warns you to sleep and eat, and even wishes you merry christmas! I'd say it can go side by side with Lords of the Realm.

Lords of the Realm (PC) Again, I'm not sure what to call this. RTS or RPG, I'm not sure.
The granpappy of castle building conquest games. You have to encourage people to come to your town, you've got to recruit peasants into the army, which lowers your happiness meter. Just a great game.

    Full Throttle (PC) action adventure?
Where else can basically kill a guy by throwing sand in his face and knocking him off his bike? C'mon, he's a bad-ass biker dude. This NEEDS to be on everyone's shelf.

    Planescape: Torment (PC) RPG
A hugely atmospheric game with brilliantly-written characters and a deep, well-crafted plot. It's also set in a world far removed from standard fantasy, making it interesting to explore.

Ultima VII: The Black Gate (PC) RPG
Interesting companions, a world which actually feels alive (people sleep, go to work, eat at the tavern, etc), where practically everything can be manipulated, where every book can be opened, where there are no generic townspeople, where you can actually get a job if you need money, and where the whole world is open to exploration.

    All for PC.

Age of Empires 2- Really set the bar high for RTS in my eyes; a ton of civilizations combined with a ton of unique techs and units makes this game extremely enjoyable and a blueprint for later RTSes.

Age of Wonders II:Shadow Magic- I might take some flak for nominating this, but this is truly an amazing turn-based strategy game, and it is severely underrated. All standalone expansions should be like this; I didn't even need the original. 15 races and a multitude of units and a remarkably deep turn-based combat engine make this game a winner.

Fallout 2-A much longer sequel to a great game, Fallout 2 has even more chances to roleplay than the original, and doesn't cease to amaze me with its intricacy.

Jagged Alliance 2- Definitely a classic turn-based strategy game, I have never seen such in-depth options in any other game. The gameplay is difficult, but once the combat system is learned, you can appreciate its intricacies. Each battle is incredible to play through.

System Shock 2-A a beastly RPG/Shooter, this game sets the bar really high for horror games, but also has a lot of RPG depth to be found.

Wasteland -Arguably the best RPG of all time. Full of depth and interactivity that transcends its age(1987 I think) Definitely worth a go, especially since it's abandonware.

    Ok, I´m going:

Baldur´s gate 2 - Come on, it´s THE RPG. It´s almost perfect, except for graphics.

Age of Empires II: Conquerors - Aztecs and Spanish rocks!

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 - Playing with the Russians, the Tank Rush becomes a way of life for you.

Diablo II - Thousand of items, lot of monsters and 5 good classes for PC, never the Hack & Slash did so funny.

Agree: Age of Empires 2, Baldur's Gate

Age of Empires RTS. Despite several sequels, this game still set the benchmark for real time empire building. Massive replay value even after you've completed the campaigns due to the random map and multiplayer options.

Civilization 2 Turn based strategy. Much slicker than it's clunkier (but still brilliant) predecessor, Civ 2 is, in my opinion, the most replayable game ever. Every new map is different, each of your opponent tribes plays a slightly different style, and the AI is pretty good. Civ 2 just pips (the also brilliant) Civ 3 because the computer seems to cheat less in this one.

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds : Real time strategy. Just like Age of Empires but with Wookiees and Imperial Walkers instead of Romans and siege engines. All the replayability of AoE plus some cool campaigns involving the likes of Chewbacca and C3PO. The Jedi Master rocks.

Eh, Galactic Battlegrounds isn't worthy. It's basically AoE2 with different skins.

Agree: Baldur's Gate II, Fallout 2 and Jagged Alliance 2.

    Nominations:

Curse of Monkey Island - PC, Adventure
Pros: Excellent humour, charming graphics, voice acting, point-and-click adventure at its best.
    Cons: -

Half-life - PC, First Person Shooter
Pros: Story-driven, good AI, variety in enemies and weapon types.
    Cons: -

    Review:-

Curse of Monkey Island- PC, Adventure
A continuation of the Monkey Island series, Curse of Monkey Island received a graphics overhaul and though helmed by a different person from the previous two games it managed to retain the essence of the Monkey Island series. Throw in great humour and unforgettable characters and you get a classic.

    Half-life- PC, First Person Shooter
A game that changed the landscape of the FPS universe. The developer's concentration on the story gave birth to a new breed of story-driven shooters, and nowadays gamers demand nothing less. Oh, and the shooting part was a lot of fun too.

I can't think of any cons for the games I mentioned but when I do I'll update the post. There are a few others I wish to nominate, but I'll do it at a later time.

[IMG] Yes, how could I forget Half-Life? And add one nomination for Fallout from me please.

Sam and Max Hit the Road (PC-Adventure) -First game I ever played; a hilarious animated adventure game with pleasant cartoon graphics and an neverending stream of irreverent comedy. The adventure is pretty robust too. Considering its age, I really can't think of any cons; it's probably the best game of 1994.

Quick! Someone propose NWN! :D Fine, I will.

    Neverwinter Nights - PC, RPG
Brought D&D to the masses with 3D graphics, addictive multiplayer and lovely PC soundsets. It tried to be Baldur's Gate and failed yet the multiplayer finally allowed people to pit their characters against one another and the world editor was easy and fun to use.

I also agree with Diablo II - when you stop thinking of it as something trying to be an RPG and play it like something looking for an excuse to slay the denizens of hell it comes out as a brilliant game.

Thats the goal. It'll take awhile to work on and I'm not going to offer ALL of my opinions on what games should be on the list and I don't expect everyone else to either. Just a game now and then, check the list to see if you've voted or anti-voted for a game or not is all I ask :) You don't HAVE to vote for a game, I'm letting people sit on the fence :)

If it's not suggested though it doesn't get considered. I might eventually take games from this list to find the best game from certain genres, systems and so forth. :) Heck, I might add developers/producers and year of release eventually. Soon we'll have a list that every nerd will want to inspect... muaaahahaha! I'll make millions! :money:
