I'm in the mood for a new game, and this one looks at least minorly interesting. (OK, it looks similar to D2, which is probably why I think it looks interesting.) Has anyone played this, and have anything to say either recommending it or not recommending it? Basically, I'm asking is it worth the $15 it costs to download?

I've played a very little bit of it, and it's pretty good fun. I'm not sure how long lived it would be, but you could do a lot worse.

Bought it a while ago on a Steam weekend special (for $2.49 or something chump-change-ish). I played about 15 minutes, couldn't get into it. Just too cartoony and child-like for my tastes. Plays pretty much exactly like Diablo 2, though - so you may enjoy it.

If you want a similar game to tide you over until D3, I'd pick up Titan Quest and it's sequel, Immortal Throne. LOVED that game. A shameless rip-off of Diablo in nearly every respect, but still very fun. The playing off Greek mythology is very nicely done and keeps things interesting visually. Beautiful graphics and a loot-lover's dream, to boot. Definitely worth $20.

Hmmm... Titan's Quest, eh? Is it necessary (or recommended) to play the first before playing the second one? If the first one is like the original Diablo, then it is quite likely terrible. Or is the second one just an expansion pack of the first one?

(EDIT: I'm at work so I can't check your link.)

    Excerpts from Torchlight's Wiki entry:
I found it nice enough. I like LotRO better, but it was nice enough.

Yes - Aldeth, use Shoshino's link, not mine. And in fact, go through the SP affiliation link. That price is much better (similar to what I paid on a special).

Yes, Immortal Throne is the expansion, and I'd go ahead and get it with the expansion. There are a ton of new weapons and a few new specializations, I believe (along with an extended end game). It plays much closer to Diablo 2 than 1. The levels aren't randomly generated, but they're big and pretty enough that it doesn't matter. The loot is. Knowing you and the games you like, this one is honestly a no-brainer.

Titan Quest: I thought it was OK, but I hated the inventory system and the way in which it saved games [or lack of].

Played Torchlight for a few hours. Decent enough. The cartoonish looks persist throughout.
I tried playing a summoner mage, but (i forget what level range) i hit a severe difficulty wall. I didn't do any "specialized" build or anything, just a first timer putting talents mainly in summons. It got harder and harder until my minions were dying 2-3 per one mob ratio. Suffice to say, that turned me off. Even if it didn't happen, i doubt i'd have finished the game.
It may have been something unknown i did wrong, or the game has class/spec balance problems.

Bought Torchlight recently, and being a massive Diablo fan, am thoroughly enjoying it. The game was made by ex-Diablo guys and it shows. A lot of innovative features here like getting your pet to sell all your loot. Also love the art style, which I can see being hit or miss for a lot of people.

Anyway. For 15 odd bucks, you can't go wrong here.

Very good game, great graphics and a soundtrack you just don't find anymore in games these days. The story is simple enough, but there references to all kinds of mythological creatures and myths/legends/philosophies, from Greek and Egyptian to Babylonian and Chinese (plus topnotch voice-acting, be sure to talk to every NPC you meet). Myths/legends buffs will fall in love with this game.

It's a class/skill system and item modifier-driven hack-and-slash with the most complex and well-developed skill/item modifier system of any Diablo clone I've played so far. While the game needs some getting used to if you play hybrids/summoners or if you have Immortal Throne installed (the expansion significantly increases the difficulty of the last two acts)the gameplay of popular archetypes (pure casters, warriors and archers) is simple and straightforward. Feel free to ask here or search the official Titan Quest forums if you need help, all the info you need should have already been posted in there somewhere.

Well, I'm enjoying Titan Quest so far.
Inventory is a bit of a pain (because you collect so much), but there's a mod (TQVault) which helps, and the personal portal system makes it easy to get to a vendor. The save game system is just like D2, but save points ("rebirth fountains") are close enough together that it's not much of an issue; I still prefer quicksaves, but this isn't a bad alternative.
