[IMG] Here is my understanding of it *snickers* ;)

Unlike in BG2 where they are two seperate abilities for theives, I think they get lumped together in BG1. So improving trap detection helps trap disarment.

Correct. There are only four thief skills: find/disarm traps, hide in shadows, pick pocket, and open lock. For better trap finding and disarming, pump points in find/disarm traps. Note that this does not guarantee sucess unless you have 100 in the skill, and sometimes you might be able to find a trap and still not disarm it if you roll poorly on your check (I assume that's how the engine handles finding and disarming traps).

Doesn't wearing armour also affect the roll?

In D&D it does. I'm not sure how this is in BG. My thief only party has no penalties. Maybe that's why you can't wear metal armor for example, I think Thief's can wear metal armor when they have high enough strength but it gives such bad penalties that it wouldn't be good. But that is very hard to implement in BG so I suppose they chose for the option that thiefs just can't wear metal.

The detect/remove traps in BG aren't statistics for the chance to remove a trap succesful. I found out that even with low skills on traps, you almost disarm ever trap in the game. I suppose the traps aren't that difficult :)

that's because each trap in the game has a value of its own too, so if you have 5 in find traps, and a trap is 5 difficult to find, then...

Armor never affects the ability to find traps, you'll obviously be unable to hide in shadows and all that, but the ability to find traps remains. Quite useful for me, since I use montaron as a tank while dungeon crawling, with a plate mail and all.

Indeed, Fighter/Thiefs can indeed just detect and disarm traps. In D&D rules, metal armor gives an armor check penalty only effects Move Silently and Hide in Shadows. That's for an armor only effects your moving abilities, not your eyes :)
