Are they too powerful? When do you use them and why? And how often?

With the exception of the part 1 of the Amelyssan battle, for example, it is conceivable (if you've been loading your thief up with spike traps) never to have to fight her again. Just lay the traps before you click on the doohickey that brings you back to her, she appears, takes 5x20d6 damage, no more Amelyssan.

Incredibly effective, well within the rules, but boring as hell.

    Thoughts?

I never use them. I seem to have so many special abilities, spells, weapons etc. that I really have no need to ever add traps to the arsenal. Like bothering with backstabbing... I never do it either.

The only reason I never bother with backstabbing is because I can never get it to work. But you can beat nearly everybody (DG is an exception, since you can't lay traps once the enemy is sighted) with traps. The others you just lead into your traps.

I think they would have been much more interesting if the bad guys were actually obliged to walk on top of them to suffer the damage. Traps have crazy range and are party friendly, which makes them a bit implausible. (Traps with brains?)

[IMG] More like, traps with tripwires that the enemy trips even though you're far away. And, assuming that YOUR thief set the traps, I guess your own party members would know how not to trip them. I use them for difficult fights like the Twisted Rune, to set up a strategic ambush. Not on dragons, though, because for some reason they never work on dragons for me....

I killed Draconis with traps...the dragon version, not the mage version. Just run away.

Twisted Rune was a cinch with traps...I kept everybody in the antechamber, put a few down for the lich, cast protection from undead on my thief (so the lich wouldn't see him, but would still appear), then lay a few for that bitch-mage who causes me so many problems...then let the rest of the party come in and smack the other folks around. Like I said, E-Z.

[IMG] I'd have to agree with Tal on this one, traps are just too ridiculously powerful. Sure you can't use them in some situations, but those you can are just plain boring if you do. Thats not to say that I never use them, I do occasionally, but not for those big fights that the rest of the game hinges on. Usually the only place I use them is when I have a seriously underdeveloped party and need to score some good damage real fast. Apart from that, I prefer to deal with my enemies face to face :)

They might be, some situations can they really turn the tide in. I only use them once. In the very beginning of the game searching for Valygar in his house and his servant gets the guards, I lay out as many traps I can. Those full plates can come really handy just after Irenicus' dungeon :D

After that, they're more or less like Tal said, you got plenty of other stuff to use.
