I never used to use traps, but after this time around, I am a believer! I set 5 spike traps for the dragon in Watcher's Keep -- dead. I set Traps for Melissan each time she came out of the field, dropped her to "Near Death" every time.

Some call this cheesy, but I call it good roleplaying -- a thief, especially in the final fight, doesn't have much going for him besides his foresight.

Yup, traps are definitely cheesy instant death to bosses. It gets even better if you use a bounty hunter. The special traps can be set from a distance. Thus, all you have to do is walk around hidden in shadows until you find an enemy, back away out of sight and set a trap next to the bad guy who does not see it coming, repeat until the bad guy dies. ;)

Bounty Hounter. That's why I loved Yoshimo so much. And I got really, really, really pissed off, losing the center of my tactics. :(

    That wasn't funny.

And I don't think, that bounty hunter traps are cheesy. Sure overpowered. But thieves are stalking people coming from behind, laying traps or do other perfid stuff. That's the reason for being a thief in the first place. Unfair, yes, but funny. :D

Planting a lot of traps for an enemy you know is there but your character doesn't is quite far from roleplaying. If your char had known that particular enemy would go there it would have been rp but since the char doesn't most of the time it isn't.

That's true. But then, a lot of things you can do, are cheesy as soon you know where what kind of enemies are, where the cool items are, which tactics work best, which spells clear the way.

I agree, bounty hunters have huge potential for cheesy gameplay, but mages and sorcerers have the same problem -> Poison cloud and most of the enemies drop without even having a chance to fight, particularly dragons.

Well, your character knows where Melisan is coming out from the field, so no cheese there. As for the dragon, well, in almost all cases they don't attack you until you go for them or set them off through dialogue -- for instance, that moron in level 4 of Watchers Keep, he tells you to go away. So I did. Right by the staircase, out of his sight, I set a whack of Spike Traps. Then, I sent in a guy with boots of speed, Dragonslayer, and a potion of speed to take a whack at the dragon. Dragon gets hostile, I run like a bunny. Moron drops like a rock right by the stairs. I never used any information I knew as a player that my characters wouldn't know.

I like the regular traps better than a bounty hunter's special traps. Isn't instant damage/death better than Maze or Otiluke's Sphere? (chance for bounty hunter fans to prove me wrong)

I don't know about the regular traps -- they're OK, I guess, but I'm a big fan of the HLA Spike Trap. I could care less about slowing some idiot, and the fireball, well, I hate that spell because it so often gets your allies as well as your foes -- if you get your conjured help they turn on you too -- AARRRGGHHH! I'm a spike trap fan all the way. Next time I go through I'm going to have my Thieves and Bards stock up on those (especially when it comes to scribing scrolls and creating potions -- by the time you get these HLAs, you can buy all the potions and scrolls you want!) If you play a Skald for a bard, the Improved song only adds on 1 bonus beyond your song, I think, and has anyone ever used that stupid flute? Spike Traps are the HLA of choice for me!

I like poison traps best(assassin does poison weapon, sets traps..). They can really disrupt someone's spellcasting, and sometimes, when you think all is lost, they kill the boss. I set poison traps around the Shadow dragon -> and whacked him -> Keldorn dead, Korgon lvl drained, the rest getting their butts kicked-> all of a sudden, he's dead, and my assassin has the shadow dragon as the 'most powerful vanquished'.

@Blog: Bounty Hunter suck past level 15, that's because his trap gets worse and worse (Hold is MUCH better compare to Maze and Sphere).

Solution: just dual him before level 15 and your good to go :)

You can also use it as breathing time. If the foe becomes mazed, or sphered, or whatever, you can use that time to set more traps, heal wounded party members, etc...

Dualing him that early means pretty low thief abilities though. But yeah, I totally agree that hold is much better.

I hate the fact you can't lay traps when enemies are about. So if you really do need to take five to heal, you have to run around a corner before setting the Maze trap (or have enough foresight to pre-set the trap). But of course, this IS a thief class, and they are all about running around corners to hide and backstab/set trap.

Since special traps can be set from afar, you can just drink an invisibility potion, get out of the target's sight, then set one from afar.
