As regards to combat tactics for the Twisted Rune...I remember on my most recent time through, I had Keldorn weilding Carsomyr, Yoshimo and my Sorceror. I had Yoshimo set all his special traps at Shangalar's spawn point. I sent off Keldorn to pound on the mage who has the Staff of the Magi and Yoshimo was invisible with a potion. The mage went down pretty quick. Shangalar was down to badly injured because of the traps... when he got all his protections up, I hit him with Remove Magic, two Pierce Shields (to lower his resistance) and then bombarded him with Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wiltings. In the meanwhile, after the mage popped, I sent over Keldorn to pound on the Beholder. Yoshimo was merrily backstabbing away on the other two thieves and the vampire with potions and Celestial Fury... the battle was over in a matter of about 5 rounds.

Just keep all your guys near where you come in and you can draw them out one by one. It's really not a hard fight, so you can just keep one character on each enemy you can beat 'em to a bloody pulp.

Sheild of Balduran. Magic scroll of protection. One guy just beat up the one of the most evil organizations in the history of Faerun.

For me, the first time I went in I was just frantically casting and slashing (depending on each character) as I went in by accident, not knowing what was in there - managed to get out with the loss of only one character. Second time was a little more structured with summoned monsters and a little less panic. Other than that I can't really remember much of how I did it really.

I had a mid-level party (10-13) my first time through, IIRC.
To beat Shangalar, I simply used the Daystar's Sunray and proceeded to hack him to death while keeping out of sight of the Beholder.
Revanek(?) the itemless fighter didn't last too long.
Then I had an NPC run over to the female mage and go invisible in front of her at the right moment - just after she casts Timestop + Meteor Swarm. The Beholder and the Vampire were also nearby, so they all got damaged by the spell.
Then, I had another NPC do the same Tactic and this time the mage decided to gate in a Fiend who kills the Beholder.
I wait for the Mage's buffs to last and she falls easily to a few Magic Missiles. The Vampire, Shyressa(?), was my biggest problem. Unfortunately I didn't know about Protection from Undead scrolls at the time, so I used web + offensive spells and after the web lost duration I had a fighter with Protection from Evil + Negative Plane Protection used as bait while everyone tried their best to damage it.

Easist way to deal with this situation: A MONK!!

Wearing amulet of power you're completely immune to vampires level drain, Hide in Shadows and Quivering Palm the female mage when she appears to prevent her gating in the demon, and procede to beat the crap out of everyone else until Shangalar's protections have run out. Then procede to beat the stuffing out of him too.

I though you can't be under any spell effect under Protection from Magic.

[IMG] You can win this battle with 2 players. First cast protection from magic scrolls on both players. Use one player with amulet of power to attack vampire. Use other player to take out beholder. After that the lich and spell caster are toast :D

But why would you want to waste the only two scrolls of Prot. from Magic in the game on this easy-ass fight?

I beat them up just couple hours ago at the end of chapter 3 and they were easy as goblin pie... as always. :p

Yoshimo just puts some traps on entrance, someone goes to talk with the lich who then teleports right on the traps... *splurts*

The beholder kills himself with the aid of Shield of Balduran. The fighter and the vampire simply fell under my party's muscle and skill. :)

The wizard even didn't know what hit her; Celestial Fury just appeared from the shadows and BOOM! - One stunned wizard ready to move to the next world.

Heh, seems i'm the only one that had some real problems with this fight?

I remember the first time... lvl9 or 10 party. Full 6 members. I think i had Yoshimo, archer-PC, aerie, edwin and two other folks i cant remember.

I fought, reloaded, repeat for 2 hours! And at that time i didnt even have on insane dificulty *shakes head*

Finaly i won...i dont know how anymore. Now i should try with tactics mod... but i guess it'll be waay easier now that i know too much about them :(

I rarely run a non mage in BG anymore. I always have some sort of mage. Thus staff of godly cheesiness (ehem: Staff of Magi:) is a must, early as possible. I get it asap, saving money for equipment. I play solo so all I need are those two things, but once I get staff of magi... wahoo! Seriously I only run half-hearted M/F/T solos now, and occasionly monk. Theres only so many times you can beat the whole asencion squad without getting tired. Let alone all the bull **** hoops you run through to get imoen.

Tactics: using the cloak of mirroring, essential for the beholder, mace of disruption for the liche and the vampire, only one char will go in melee, the enemy spellcasters will hurt themselves. The rest of the party waits near the door, and uses range weapons.
The True sight and Dispel magic of an inquisitor can make this fight quick.

Simple fight. As soon as you enter, send party back up stairs as far as they can go. Then send in Minsc with the Cloak of Mirroring (which turns really pathetic in ToB) and the Warblade +4, chat it up with the lich, then just go berserker when the enemies attack. Any spell that isn't deflected by the Cloak of Mirroring is canceled out by Minsc's berserker fury.

    It is, as said above

I commend you Gothmog. You stumble upon it, like I did the first time. But you kept reloading until you did it with your relativly low level party. That was a tough fight to just walk into.

Me, I went back back much later in the game. Kind of a cowards way out, but at the time, I thought I was way out of their league.

Yup... it must be easy when you already know all the opponents, their weakeneses and strenghts. And what to use against them.

But, just like JamesT said... if you trip in that hellhole without proper equipment and no knowledge about it it is a hellova fight.
But it surely is interesting... in fact i think it was the most difficult battle i had in the whole game. Great challenge :)
Later there may be difficult battles, but then you have lots and lots of special items and know when to use them. More options in any case.

    BTW @jaguar
The tactics you described require chapter 6 party (Warblade +4). And by then Minsc is way stronger than before.

You could try it without those items you normaly use. And with a lowlevel party. Might be a challenge again ;)
