I've just started a fighter/mage/thief. I've been told that thiefs can backstab with any weapon they can usually use (and I now have ** in quaterstaves) but my question is; can thiefs backstab with any weapon after aquiring the use any item HLA?

No. The only weapons suitable for backstabbing are those flagged as usable by pure-class thieves in their .itm file. As UAI simply removes all item restrictions, this isn't affected. So no backstabbing with Holy Avenger or the Staff of the Magi!

Everything that Magpie said is correct. And the most important part is the weapon must be able to be used by single classed thieves. That's why the Staff of the Magi is out. Even though it's a quarterstaff and thieves can normally backstab with quarstaves, because it's listed as only usable by mages in the item description, no backstabbing. This is true for all multi-class thieves as well. F/T w/UAI can't backstab with fighter-only weapons, and UAI doesn't give C/T the ability to backstab with cleric weaspons (except the quarterstaff and the club which are also usable by thieves).

Why would you want to backstab with staff of the magi?

Yeah, that would be of the awesome. But as it is, that doesn't work, because you can't backstab with the SotM (not usable by single-classed thief), and the invisibility drops as soon as you switch weapons.

Use Mislead. Sneak to enemy's back. If you are improved hasted and dual wielding, you will have 7+ attacks per round. Activate critical strike. Now, start backstabbing. Your hits will be critical backstabs for more than 100 damage per hit. (and you have so many attacks per round, even without GWW, scary!) Most enemies will just get chunkified. This is the real fun of F/M/T class.
