I will be running a new party in Ultima Exodus (Ultima III) via dosbox. It's been a LONG time since I played the older Ultima games and I am trying to remember what type of party I use to run, to no avail. I believe Rangers and Druids were uber characters and I can't remeber if you neded the Thief or if the Barbarian sufficed for treasure chests.

After this run through, I will attempt Ultima IV, Quest of the Avatar. That game brings back fond memories of Shamino, Iolo, Dupre and cast. One of the better RPGs I have ever played. No destroying of the Arch-Villian to win the game, instead your quest is to rise to Avatardom! Great fun...:)

Was Ultima III the one where you needed to plunge your party into a whirlpool in the sea to get to another land?

It's been a LONG time since I played that one, so no clue what the party composition was. I think I had it for my Apple II+ back in the early '80's.

I remember Ultima V where you had to ride a boat over a waterfall into a whirlpool to get to the underworld.

    DMC,

That would be the one. You can make 4 characters from Fighter, Paladin, Barbarian, Thief, Ranger, Lark, Illusionist, Cleric or Druid. Human, Dwarf, Elf, Bobbit or Fuzzy were the races. I believe I orignally played it on my IBM PC Jr, 128K system. "%" was the symbol for impassable terrain. "$" for Treasure Chests. It had a good amount of monsters in it, ranging from Goblins, Orcs & Skeletons to Dragons, Balrons and Devils. you needed to find a boat to travel to a few lands. I think you could attack Pirate Ships to win a boat if the Pirates attacked your party while traveling along the coast.

I think Paladin, Ranger, Barbarian and Druid was the Party to go for, but I just don't remember. It will be fun to fool around with a few different parties and try the old classes out again.

Found a free copy of the manual. Alchemist is another class. Many classes have "Half Disarm Traps" ability. Ranger is one of them. After reading the manual, I now remember why Ranger was so good. They could cast the lesser half of both Wizard and Cleric spells and use Half of the Disarm Traps ability and utilize both good Armor and Weapons. They were the uber class. Think my party will go as follows. I just can't remember if you need the full pledged Thief or if one of the "Half-Theif" classes will be enough.....

    Dwarf Fighter
    Human Ranger
    Elf Wizard
    Human Druid

I always liked paladins. They fit well with the game in role playing and were as powerful as rangers (IMO).

The Ranger is the only character in my party with Disarm Traps ability. I could replace the Fighter with a Pally though....
