I really could not believe this article! They are trying to say that the new game I am trying out until NWN decides to show up, is so addictive that some one could actually kill themselves over it.

Please----everyone wants to rush home to play their favorite game, or stay up all nite when the parents aren't looking. It is called self control......it really is possible to make yourself not do something. They are even comparing it to drugs!

I just dunnoooo! What do you guys think?

Ok, I admit it, I laughed.

I love it, the guy is depressive, pschitzoid, has epilleptic seizures, and owns a firearm. No one can ever take the blame, not the 'victim', not the parents, or the family... something tells me this guys lid wasn't screwed on so tight but...

    its the games fault... hysterical.

    EverCrack, hahahahaha!

    Evercrack!

Gimme a break already. The guy had problems before. His lack of self control could not have been the factor at ALL in this.

So I'm supposed to believe that the manufacturer "should have" made a game that was mediocre so that noone would want to play, and no overweight pizza delivery boy with schizoid/depressive/epileptic tendencies would kill himself. Oh yeah. That's a game I want to buy!

Besides.... Narcotics are chemically addicting. Games are mentally addicting because of the dependant personality of the player.

[IMG] What does sexually anorexic mean? Do you throw up after? I am confused....

Anyway - It always amazes me how pathetic people are. Everyone is a victim...The evil computer game made my child kill himself...

Anyone logging those kinds of hours on a computer game probably has other serious issues. Maybe mommy should have spent a little more time with him when he was growing up.

I can't believe that the first thing the mother did was blame the game and hire a lawyer! A bizarre culture we live in.

Well - I gotta go...The chatroom is waiting and I have to get back to SoA! ;) :spin:

[IMG] What a load of crap... Ok, let me dissect some parts of it & provide some insightful analogies.

He knew he wasn't supposed to, and yet he played. Might as well end the discussion right here, but ok, let's go on. Every game, especially a 3D one will have an epilepsy warning somewhere. If he read it and ignored it (and even if he didn't, he knew that as epileptic he shouldn't be playing), that's totally his own decision. If a guy takes a hammer and beats himself to a bloody pulp with it you can't go suing the tool company for making the hammer potentially dangerous. (Not in Europe anyway. But I wouldn't be too surprised if you could in USA.)

Right. And some car companies could cap the maximum speed of their cars at 130 km/h and market them as the world's safest cars. Gee, I wonder why none of them do that? Probably because they want to actually sell their cars. I also believe Verant actually wants to be able to sell EverQuest. Man, what a weird concept!

Oooh, boy. I guess we can now blame games for self-induced sleep deprivation too (not to mention awakening of lunacy in a person). Might as well continue with TV, books, magazines, radio...

Ah, and calling someone by a nickname they chose for themselves makes them less real and "false" I suppose? Did this "expert" actually experience anything he's talking about or was hearing rumours about it as far as his "knowledge" goes?

Another "expert" opinion. Yes, surely nuthouses are chock full of people going mad because they're playing too much MMORPGs! Reminds me of the "Doom" debate a couple of years back. Very similar, only they blamed it for murders and mass killings. I suppose there's just no way USA (speaking generally) will ever run out of scapegoats, so looking at the society/individual and finding out what's wrong with them is not an option.

Nah, just blame games. It's much easier.

Oh, so they forgot about epilepsy already? Guess they were found out the warning was there. Let's go for something that's not there now then. Since the game did not shoot the guy, nor tell him to kill himself, I'm not exactly sure how they intend to prove that the game is dangerous to one's health. Because hundreds of thousands of people (short of those who kill themselves) don't bear any injuries from playing it. But hey, maybe they can blame the carpal tunnel syndrome on the game. Too much using of the mouse - it's all EQ's fault! (Oh my, did I just give someonebody an idea they could use... *sigh*)

He. Hehe. Hehehe. This doesn't need a comment to be funny, it's a joke already.

Use of "might be won" gives you a good idea how much he believes in their winning this case.

    Hmm...
Well no, not in the US either, if that was the case, the gun manufacturer would be getting sued instead of EverQuest. The game didn't kill him, the gun did (or more accurately, he killed himself, with the gun.)

Also I think that Walsh was mis-represented by the rather irresponsible (and clearly hype seeking) journalist. Notice they didn't actually quote the man saying that he thinks that "there is a growing problem with games like Everquest" that's what the journalist inferred that he said, however the man's actual quote more or less just says, "Sure the game might have had something to do with it, but that's what happens when you get a depressed schitzoid, a computer game and a gun in the room at the same time." I think this Walsh guy was the only one in the article who wasn't jumping on the "evil computer game" bandwagon, and he was misconstrued in order to make EQ seem all the more villainous.

Sniper, the difference between crack cocaine, and powdered cocaine, is that one is for junkies in the 'hood' and the other is for junkies in college and business men in bathroom stalls.

[IMG] But no!! This is a marketing opportunity sent by heaven itself !!! Look, if I were them I'd print a HUGE warning on all Everquest packages: (something along the lines of: )

"WARNING: this game is the first piece of software officially classified by the federal government as ADDICTIVE. In fact according to the ministry of Justice this game can be HAZARDOUS FOR YOU HEALTH!!! This game is not for the faint of heart. ONLY BUY IF STRONG-WILLED"

Man, They'd sell thousands of copies on the first day! The ultimate rush! :D

[IMG] that site is hilarious! some of the ratings are misnomers though, as they don't match up to the scores, i.e. if i were to see a game with an 'adult content' rating of 5/5 :1eye::1eye: i'd want to pick it up immediately!

You know, I have been thrown into a psych ward because I was "too absorbed" and so forth, but it wasn\t computer games... it was BOOKS.

If they bloody well start labeling computer games as addictive, they should then label almost everything addictive from books to cleaning implements! Trust me, I know.

    *end rant mode^

A (sick) man is dead and people are laughing. I don't get it.
It is a shame that his mother is misplacing the blame. It happens too frequently. Bands have been sued for causing suicide (Judas Priest is an example). In this case, it is difficult to blame the mother for her sons death. He was mentally ill. He was 21. She tried to get him help. He made his choices. In my mind, it is his fault. Blaming Sony is absurd.

[IMG] I certainly escaped safe death. I had Everquest in my hands today. My guardian angel must have taken the money from my wallet and then told me to wait for IWD-2 and NWN ... and he provided distraction: I probably forgot to buy EverCrack over the opportunity to insult a kid that wanted to buy Diablo-II by stating: "Every moron with a mouse can handle Diablo! Go get BG-2, that's the real drug!" ;) Great day

But wait, I'm not epileptic, shizoid, depressive, overwight pizza-delivery nor do I own a firearm ... :D ... but, just to play it safe, I'll never chop onions again ... maybe playing a raging barbarian in BG-2 makes me get ideas ...

I think the "Sue Sony!"-method is more a splendid money making oportunity for ambitious lawyers who instrumentalize the feelings of the parents to get their percentage of a possible compansation ... Sony is a japanese billion dollar enterprise and america has a jury system - almost everything is possible that way. And the media/ press get their share as well  (no, no conspiracy theory of mine :p ) However, no one can seriously blame Sony for making a good game.

    *sigh* :toofar:

What a world we live in. This reminds of the woman who spilled McDonald's hot coffee on herself and sued McDonald's for a $1 million (or was it 2?). You can't blame someone for making a game too good. And even if it results in suicide, they should've gotten help instead of suing Sony.

[IMG] Hey, c'mon folks - haven't you all heard yet? Taking responsibility for your own actions, or the actions of those you are in care of, went out of style years ago! No matter what happens, it's your fault, not mine. No siree!

It's because my parents were divorced..yeah...that's why I did it! Oh, no, wait, I was temporarily insane! No! No...I heard it on an old LP...when I played it backwards...on high speed?

[Edit] Sniper: Crack cocaine is more highly refined than powdered cocaine to make the narcotic substance as concentrated as possible (as I understand it). This makes it not only more potent, but much more addictive and much, much more lethal.

The 'Hood', a.k.a., the 'Ghetto', is a slang/ ebonics reference to impoverished, crime-ridden, pre-dedominantly 'black' and hispanic urban areas. Originally it referred to specific areas in L.A., Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and New York, most of which were composed of horrible, run-down, public housing projects and slums and overrun with gangs, or 'hoods', as in hoodlums.
