[IMG] Although I'm not particulary familiar with the Forgotten Realms, much less the Underdark, a new FR book has been published recently. A lot of it seems to focus on Drow (when do they stop being flavor of the month?), Kuo-toa, and other underground species (earth genasai, svirfneblin, dwrves, mind flayers, etc.).

What I think this book says as a whole about FR is that how much freaking money you need to pay to understand all of it in 3E. The FRCS was created as an overview of the book (with lots of extraneous stuff, IMHO), but then they divided FR into several books (Silver Munches, Unapproachable East, and now Under dark), which means that the DMs (and some players) have to shell out extra money just to know a bit more about FR.

Still, I'm not saying Wizards is a Big Bad Greedy Fat Cat Corporation; the opposite is true - RPGs are a niche industry, what with all the CRPGs and video games running around (to say nothing of fresh air!), and I believe Wizards needs every dollar it can get. Furthermore, I think that each FR speciality book covers a nice amount of material, although much of it is obscure and strange (I saw a lot of weird stuff in Unapproachable East). Much information seems to be rather esoteric and complex, but I think that those who want to play an in-depth Underdark campaing will be satisfied with the book, considering how much content and crunch the FR speciality books provide

Well, this I think will be a great success.

I think Wizards is doing a great job, publishing about specific areas of Faerun. Although I haven't read many of those books, I think they are mostly published to get the attention away from the whole Chosen of Mystra thing, which was too much emphasized in the FRCS, in my opinion. With these area specific books, they probably also want to show that there is more to the Faerun than the Sword Coast, and other popular places like Icewind Dale and Waterdeep. There is just too much to tell about Faerun to put in the FRCS, and if you want to make a very detailed campaign, these books seem like a good (but expensive) source for information.

This Underdark book will probably sell good. The focus on the drow home lands will probably do good with drow fanatics, which I think are mostly the younger players, who are probably willing to spend money on such a book.

And again, the art looks great.
