Has it occured to anyone that the name "Patriot Act" might be an attempt to subconciously sway public opinion.

Of course it has. None too subtle, either. The more of this piece of crap, Big Brother'esque, "you want to exchange some of your rights for peace of mind, don't you?", absurd legislation that goes away, the happier I am.

Now, how about making the rest of the so-called "Patriot" Acts disappear?

9/11 sent us into panic and we allowed Bush to do things we may forever regret.

    Yeah!
Like Section 101 that sets up a fund to reimburse agencies for combating terrorism or repairing damage due to terrorism!
Or Section 102 that condemns discrimination against Arab or Muslim Americans!
Or Section 103 that increases funding to the FBI!
Or Section 205 that makes it easier for the FBI to hire translators!
Or Section 314 calling for cooperation among banks, regulators and law enforcement to deter money laundering!
Or Section 402 authorizing an increase in Border Patrol, Customs and INS personnel on the northern border!
Or Section 501 authorizing the Attorney General to pay rewards for assistance in combatting terrorism!
Or Section 613 increasing the benefit payments for safety officers who are killed or disabled!

Really, there's a whole slew of stuff in there, and most of it has nothing to do with infringing on rights. The parts that do should be reviewed just like the part the story of the original post indicated.

The problem was that the bill was literally forced through Congress without a chance to review it properly. In fact, when more time was called, Ashcroft told Congress that they had intel on an immement threat and if they didn't act on the bill without delay and debate that anyone who died thier blood would be on Congress's hands. So it was passed without debate. Yes there are lots of good provisions in there but there is a ton of s*** in it also. The problem wasn't that the bill was passed, it was that it was forced through, which is typical of the Bush administration. Do whatever you want and to hell with what anyone else wants or thinks and if they don't agree, they are unpatriotic and are serving the terrorists. That BS is the whole root of the problem. Combine that with one of the most secretive adminstrations ever and no wonder people question what is going on.

Agreed, BTA - There are some good law enforcement tools in the bill. It is the parts that disregard the Consitution that have me going. Do you agree that the first responsibility of any elected offical in our country is to defend the Constitution? I may be a little "old school" in this regard, but I feel that the Constitution defines us as uniquely "American," which I think is more than a good thing.

As I said: panic got the bill passed. Otherwise Congress would have reviewed it and debated it. The president, etal are supposed to defend the constitution. 90% of the bill may be good but that10% or even 1% will haunt us if not challenged.
