To upgrade the mace of disruption you need some illithium ore.

To get the ore you must accept the quest from the priest guy at the temple of helm (or some other temple if you're a cleric) to get a famous(pompous) sculpter to create some work for the temple. Visit the sculpter in the government district at the something that starts with J's house. He'll say he will only work in pure illithium and tell you of an ore merchant in waukeem's promenade. Go to the merchant who is at the western side and she'll tell you of that she can't get as much as Sir Sarles the sculpter wants. First ask her about her source and pay her 2000 gp (or was it 1000?) then ask her for the illithium subsitute and she'll make one for you which will be ready the next day. Ask about her source first!!

Then go to the copper coronet and talk to the dwarf in there besides korgan he should be in the upper west. he'll tell you his illithium was stolen. Go to the bridge district and go to the derelict house at the western edge. Enter and kill Neb but don't kill any of the spirit children he summons as they give you more experience if you free them (by killing Neb) Get the ore and the Neb's head.

You can give the head to inspector breggans in the council of six building in the government district for gold and +1 rep.

If you want to finish the temple quest when you talk to Sir Sarles DON'T HAVE THE ILLITHIUM IN YOUR INVENTORY. Drop it on the ground otherwise he will take it even if you have the subsitute with you.

Dangit Avarahtar, wasted my time for nothing
