Uses for Slayer Change

Discussion in 'BG2: Shadows of Amn (Classic)' started by The_Nerd, Jun 12, 2001.

Whats the point of having it?
I never once used it because of the reputation hit and it doesnt last long enough to help in any major battle.
Can someone justify some good uses for Slayer?

I never used it myself but I've heard that the main advantages are
    1) huge damage
    2) huge resistances

reputation penalty? its not that big a penalty actually as long as u can find a temple... maintaining your rep at the neutral level is really easy...

and well.. i think it might come in useful if u go solo...

When you're a powergamer or have and evil alignment I would say: Use it. Otherwise don't. I explain it with an example, from Lord of the Rings. Using the ring too much would slowly let Frodo change to evil, would slowly give him more the will of keeping the ring for his own. The same is with you and the Slayer. When you make too much use of it, it will change you. Slowly. And you got much more powers then Frodo or Gollem so you could change into a dark powerful lord. Of course this all don't really happen that way in the game, you'll only loose reputation, but common, get al little bit into the story!

I never really used it either but I think there are some advantages to it. Firstly if your are playing an evil party - the rep loss doesn't matter (and might actually be useful) and gives you access to the best melee fighter in the game (even if the time is limited it gives you the upper hand at the start of a difficult fight (anyone try him against a dragon?). Also there are some points in the game where he is meant to be able to help speciifically. For example, he can open some of the unopenable doors in the Mind Flayers city (so I've heard). Of course, like every character, there is usually another way to do it but....

Anyway, slayer not good for good parties, might be good for evil parties.

I remember fighting avalon(adalon?), the silver dragon. When my berserker got hit and eventually had half his hit points left, I changed to the slayer, in the hope that I might turn the tide of battle.... The dragon beat the crap outta of me, though I survived rather a long time =/

Though my evil party I am a berserker with more hitpoints than the slayer, so... I dont think the slayer change that usefull again, I'd rather use the enrage.

Though I have a mage, and for a mage I must say the change is much more valueable than for a fighter.

Changing into the Slayer saved my rear end bigtime last night. My party left for Spellhold to get Imoen as soon as we could and had been making good progress until we got to Balor in the Sniberfilkin-amathingy village (how's that for spelling). Well no matter what we tried we were getting torn apart. I and my character were getting pretty enraged after about the fourth devasting defeat so we just funneled that rage into a little thing called the Slayer. Wow is all I got to say, the Slayer had Balor on his knees by himself in less than twenty seconds. I needed a reputation drop anyway, 15 was getting to high for my neutral party, well for me anyhow.

I never used it if possible. It really seems like a special ability for those of evil alignment. You dont really have good aligned ppl turning into the avater of Bhaal. I only used it when automatically transformed into it in Spellhold, in the mindflayer dungeon to get through one of the doors and in the grove (please don't resurrect that topic). If your an evil party however, I guess it could be very useful with all the stat bonuses.

The only time I used it was in the Mind Flayer lair. I needed to open the last door (big brains door) and couldn't find another Mind Flayer to do it for me.

I changed into the Slayer very briefly just to keep my reputation down for my non-good party members. I know she wouldn't have left, but by then my character was deep into the romance with Jaheira, and didn't want her to be upset. So he turned into a big scary monster in the middle of the Government District, and everyone ran away :)

Well, I am a powergamer *and* never used it. And I dislike it too. Who needs it anyhow? Yes, resistances and striking power may be pretty nice but I always got along quite well without it.

Alot of these posts just go to show how limited in use slayer change is.

When I played a monk I never used the Slayer transformation. The cause is that I did more damage per round, and had more magic resistance when staying in my own skin.

But when I played a sorcerer, I used the transformation 3 times, 1. final battle with Bodhi 2. defeating Irenicus in the Underland 3. defeating irenicus in hell.

I have lost 6 reputation points but no matter, my rep. in the end was 14(popular), not bad I say for a neutral party I think.

When i was fighting the demon knight guys in the underdark, i got killed by them about 5 times.. then i got everyone out of the room, except for viconia and jan, cast death ward and negative plane protection, then got an animal. then i had jan and vic leave, changed into the slayer, and just ate all the knights...i then felt cheap...

I can handle the game without changing into the slayer. To go back and again explain it with the One Ring in Lord of the Rings, When Aragorn, Gandalf, Boromir or even Saruman had used the ring, they maybe could defeat Sauron but the problem wouldn't disappear for the user of the ring would become the next Black Lord. Using the Slayer and defeating with it wouldn't be a solution, but would change you slowly into something even worse then Irenicus already was.
