OK, i have just had a panic attack in my last lesson. Thank you 8people for helping me get over it.

Where's the chillout CD? And who else has had one? Are they some kind of sign?

Vertigo is a fear of heights, not panic attacks...

Unless of course your classroom is very high up :)

Eh, I get vertigo from time to time.
It is NOT a fear of heights. Vertigo is when you lose your sense of balance, and the room starts spinning. It's usually accompanied by nausea, dizziness, and profuse sweating.

It can be triggered by heights, too much caffiene, or alcohol. At least in my experience.

[IMG] TeenyS - it was an attack of nervs, I dunno if it has a name.

Teeny got upset over something and totally flipped (don't hate me) She went all shakey and paniky and took her ages to calm down, oh well, we won't watch it again ;)

I'll have to remember that for my girlfriend Nutrimat.

"No, no dear. I'm not suffering from too many Irish carbombs and boilermakers. No, no... I'm absolutely not sloppy drunk. I'm suffering from an attack of vertigo."

I used to have panic attacks quite frequently some years back -- I was going to school and working full time -- overstressed, exhausted and not eating properly. Then I would even get panicked just thinking about the possibility of having an attack in public. I finally figured out a way to stop them, even after they'd already begun. It was all about breathing rhythm. When they would start, I would focus my mind on a pleasant scene and start counting... on the first 1,2,3,4, I would breathe in...and then exhale to the count of the same. I know it sounds silly, but I did that 2 or 3 times during an attack and was able to stop it right in its tracks. It seemed like once I knew I could stop them and had them under control, they went away and never came back. Hope this helps.

As far as vertigo, I've had that as well (oh, lucky me!). Had a bad sinus infection that gave me vertigo for one month. Had to stay in bed for all that time....dizziness, ringing in the ears, but not much nausea. Had to take Antivert for many months after. But it finally went away. Vertigo and panic attacks are not the same thing. While they both can mimic some of the same symptoms (dizziness, sweating, nausea), they are indeed different -- vertigo is a "condition" that can occur with a variety of illnesses; panic attacks are "events" in and of themselves.

Used to have panic attacks, mostly stress related. My most famous one happened in grade 11. I was taking a grade 12 class, and the stress was amazing. one day i was drinking a pop and it felt like i had swolled car battery acid. Went to the ER, they found that at the age of 15 I had developed an ulcer. Most likely the cause was stress. The good side passed the course with a 93%

From that day, Ilearned a few things. Every day relax. EIther physical activity or some 'quiet time'. Don't worry to much about the small things, nothing is perferct. at the last, laugh.

Notice the lack of fear in the definition given. Fear of something (such as heights) is a phobia. Vertigo is not a phobia, although fear of heights and vertigo usually go together.

I have, as I said above, occasional vertigo attacks (diagnosed as such by a doctor). There were no heights, and no fear or terror, involved, although I AM afraid of heights, and get a mild case of vertigo when looking down from a high place. This mild vertigo usually goes away when I stop looking down, unlike the other vertigo attacks which are very intense and can last for 2-3 hours. I could go on about nerve damage to my ears, or how your inner ear regulates your sense of balance and can cause vertigo if the balance is disrupted, etc., but my point is that vertigo is not always caused by heights, and does not always involve fear.

So, on-topic: Teensabre, panic attacks are fairly normal, especially in the years of angst (teenagers) and are not a sign of brain tumors or anything like that, if that's what you were worried about. If you experience it again, try to calm down, do something relaxing or soothing (music helps).

One reason people panic is they feel overwhelmed by work, school, or other problems. It helps if you try to take one step or problem at a time, and don't overload yourself worrying about everything, which only makes it harder to focus.

The fear of hights, specifically, is acrophobia.

Vertigo is, according to my pocket Oxford, "A feeling of dizziness and loss of balance, especially when you are very high up".

    ESPECIALLY. Not necessarily :p

    I hav a fever, I'm getting vertigo...so I'm
    really avoiding standing up

Hey, 8people, you'd better not tell them what the PA was about. ;)

So, is it a vertigo attack or a panic attack, or what?

[IMG] Panic attacks are the most evil sensation on earth!

I had one in my year 9 SATS for English. It was awful I tells ya! I just couldnt think straight at all! I felt like just crying and running away.

I also had one when I took my then-girlfriend to the cinema to see the Sweetest Thing. It turned out to be the very worst kinda film to see with romance in mind, and I nearly exploded with panic that she was going to get bored or angry with me.

Yes indeed, panic attacks are horrible.

You know, wildfire's definition somewhat sounded like a definition of what happens if you spin around and around really, really fast and then just stop.
