It seems vinyl recordings are making a comeback of sorts. I use mulitple formats for listening to music, including, MP3s, AACs, vinyl records and standard redbook CDs (I also have a small amount of SACDs, and HDCDs).

I still like vinyl and I have a Stanton USB turntable next to my PC, so that I can listen and rip vinyl into my computer. I use LAME to digitize vinyl analog recordings into MP3s. What's your choice?

 

Vinyl rules. I still remember the dreaded era of late 80s to late 90s, when the record industry, in order to maximize the profits, tried to convince music fans that this soulless plastic thing is better than vinyl and that it is the future of music. It's good to see that they fell in their own trap, and that many recordings of this period, which originaly were released only on cd format, are now re-released on vinyl. As Scorpions sing "How does it feel babe to taste sweet revenge" .

 

Now I'm an old stick in the mud who lives in the past most of the time, but seriously? Vinyl? Even CDs are old school nowadays. The convenience of digital music is so overwhelming, I can't see why anybody would want to bother with vinyl any more.

All the record stores around here are closing down, so I'm not sure where anybody would go to buy vinyl, even if they did want it.

 

I casually collect vinyl's these days, but that is it. My old record player went out a couple years ago, but they really are kind of cool still.

 

I prefer vinyl played on 1200s or 1210s with some nice needles. But I havent bought vinyl in a while as all my music these days comes on cd, I dont even have any vinyl left, you ever tried carrying 100 records around in a crate? Its pretty heavy. Still, I prefer vinyl, and djing with vinyl vs cds is much nicer, its nice to have 'hands on' control. The only digital format I like is flac, everything else is either poor quality or too large. I cant even remember the last time I touched vinyl...it was more than a few years ago at least.

 

My father has a huge collection of vinyl records, but it's not something he started collecting recently. He's had most of them for 40 years.

Don't be sure about that. The prices of second hand records usually are higher than the prices of unused reissues on CDs. Of course that depends on many factors, such as the rarity of the record, the condition of both sleeve and vinyl, the country of pressing, if it's original or reissue etc. For example the vinyl edition of Motorhead's "Sacrifice" costs about 250 euros , while the cd about 15-20 euros. A more extreme example would be Pink Floyd's debut. I have seen the first English pressing of this one reaching the price of $2500. So, I'd suggest, before you sell them as a lot, check them very carefully, perhaps some of them worth a small fortune.

 

I voted Both even though I don't own any vinyls. Every time I've had the chance to hear the vinyl version of something I've previously only heard on a CD, I've really liked the analog sound. Plus I really like the format; having an A side and a B side with an opening and closing track on each gives an album a nice structure. Even with new(ish) CD's I tend to think of where the B side would start or where it would make sense for it to start. (With me this is actually a remnant of using cassette tapes, but it's the same thing.)

If I ever start collecting vinyls, it'll be my doom.
