The Virtue mod for BG2: ToB has been publically released!

This mod sets out to remedy an apparent flaw in the game by splitting reputation into two separate variables: Reputation, which represents how people in the game feel about the party; and Virtue, which represents how morally correct the party's actions are. Virtue will
now appear alongside reputation on the character screen, and be treated separately where appropriate.

Additionally, Virtue will affect your alignment, so if your Virtue goes down, it drags your alignment down with it. Party members also respond to Virtue instead of reputation, so you can have a party that feels your actions are good, even if everyone around you hates you. Additional familiar dialog has been written to account for the impact of changing alignment on your familiar.

Paladins will now fall after committing a SINGLE non-virtuous act, and rangers will now fall after their Virtue drops too low. You can get away with killing commoners without incurring a Reputation hit, so long as nobody sees you. Your Virtue always drops, however.

Some of the things for which you would previously have incurred no penalty will now affect your Virtue. This includes abandoning or killing NPCs and the trials you face in Hell. Additionally, there is now motivation to hurry to rescue Imoen, since abandoning her to suffer the tortures of Spellhold is considered an evil act.

Hopefully, this enhancement will improve the role-playing value of BG2

The Virtue mod is packaged in WeiDU format, and requires ToB to play. Head over to the download page to grab it.

Please head over the the forum at Forgotten Wars to provide bug reports and feedback.

[IMG] Any reason why ToB is needed? Are there any plans to release an SoA version?

Um, there are probably some ToB-only script commands used in there or something. I'll take a look and see about the possibility of an SoA only version, but the coding is pretty indistinct, so it'd be quite tricky.

    Excellent idea!

I don't know if I like the idea of having to go get Imoen right away though... I don't want to have to always have Immy in my party.

Any mod is a good mod I always say... unless, of course, that mod is TDD.

Can it be installed in mid-game, or do I have to start a new game? Has anyone encountered any bugs playing this mod?

I installed this Virtue mod last night. I was playing chaotic evil party, and when I loaded the game after install, there was a message saying "Party's reputation lowered by 2" (or something like that) over and over again. I thought it just lowered my rep because of bad things I had done earlier. I just stood there for about ten minutes, and it didn't stop. I tried starting a new game and then it seemed to work properly, so don't install this mod while in mid-game.

Please hang on to that saved game. I bet Sim will want you to send it to him so he can figure out why that's happening to you.

Yes, I'd certainly like to see this savegame if you still have it. If you could send it to jcompton@forgottenwars.net, that would be great. Thanks.

Damn! I deleted it already. :( Started a new game and still some bad news. When I enter the Trademeet, animals attack these soldiers, and when soldier dies, I lose 5 points of virtue. The same happens when Ama attacks me with group of muggers and town guard attacks them. They kill the guard and I lose my virtue. Not good..

Well taking this in real life perspective...
you see a soldier getting attacked by a group of savage animals and you just stand there and do nothing. This might be the thought involved with "Virtue", but if you already have your hands on some other enemies, Virtue shouldn't count against you because you couldn't save him...

I have a little story for you: I just yesterday started a new game playing cavalier. I kicked Imoen out and cleaned the whole place, and I had even the time to polish my armor before stepping into the sunlight. There I see Imoen and Irenicus doing some spellslinging, and bunch of shadow thieves come to intercept.. and they're toast. After that come the cowled enforcers. My former captor disintegrates them while I watch and see myself becoming a fallen paladin. Quite a nice start for a day.
Sure I would have tried to rescue those enforcers from Irenicus, but I couldn't.. Did I do something wrong? :(
Hope that new version corrects this too.
Anyways, I haven't seen that much differences between my reputation and virtue. Surely my virtue has bounced between chaotic good and chaotic neutral a few times, while my reputation steadily kept climbing up. Honestly I don't see that much profit in having that virtue number in my character screen.. yet.

Did you rescue Minsc and Jaheira from their cages? You get a Virtue drop if you leave both of them to die, although if you didn't see a message then that's a bug in itself.

I really dislike the idea of having to "rescue" those soldiers in Trademeet (even though the drop in virtue will come handy ;) -having Viconia in my group and all. Second, how much time I have before the virtue starts dropping (due of un-rescued Imoen)? Decided to give 'Imoen Romance' another chance, and that mod requires some lenghty quests to be done before rescuing her...

Well I have the same problem as Mayfairy has at the beggining of the game except my virtue drops even with Minsc and Jaheira in my party upon leaving, and even though I uninstalled the mod it still say's "Virtue has droped for leaving Minsc" or some **** like that even though it has been uninstalled, which is very annoying considering it makes me a fallen Paladin.

I sure did rescue them. Right now I'm playing with new party and new version of Virtue, so let us see what happens..

EDIT: "For leaving Minsc to die - The party's virtue has decreased:2" This happened just after a cutscene where cowled ones take Imoen and Irenicus. The funny thing here is that Minsc is in my party. This might have happened because I had already started the game when I installed Virtue mod.

You don't. That bug has been resolved.

Ah, yes, if you install it after freeing Minsc, the problem will persist. I can add a check to see if Minsc is in the party, but I'm not sure I can do anything to prevent your Virtue dropping if you send him off to the Copper Coronet.
I suppose I should add something to the readme recommending a new game.

This is strange. It shouldn't be possible for this to happen if you've uninstalled properly. I can only conclude that something odd happened while uninstalling, really, so the mod's still there.

When entering De'Arnise keep and seeing this troll killing one servent you go speak to this other servant (can't remember his name) but he is marked as being hostile. He talks to me normally and doesn't attack me, but when in party AI mode on your NPC's attack him.
Same thing happend to me a few times in the city of Athkatla.
