I read this in a local newspaper, so I can't give you any link.
Thing is, he said, poorly translated of course, that they european countries have to exterminate terrorist like rats. And that national and religious intolerance must be stopped, because they're a threat to national stability and unity of their multi ethnic country (russia).
What worries me is how they use language in such a blunt way. I can't understand why they speak as if we were idiots who coulnd't understand any thing.
"We have to kill them cause they're a threat" is too simple. Too simple. I don't know why I worry about distant things, but politician's speeches don't vary that much, so it's like one more example of they underestimate our comprehension skills. End of rant.

At least he uses common sentences, simple talk. Our politicians like to confuse the crap out of people by using words noone has ever heard of.

If Putin talks like that - he's got the right idea (not about his policies, mind you...). Have a look at that George Orwell essay on the matter of politicians raping language with plenty of superfluous waffle there only to make it sound glorious and confusing. Simplicity is a good thing, in speech.

You, Aikanaro, mentioned Orwell. What about that part of 1984 in which they take words from the dictonary and erase them forever? If I recall correctly, he said that language controls thought, and the less words, the simpler the thoughts. Not a good thing, for sure. And all that work just to stupidize (sp?) people.
If Putin had wanted to specify what they were going to do, he could've been more precise. Terrorist is one of those ambiguous words Orwell calls (I'm not sure how it is in english) doublespeak? One should be careful when labeling people who want to separate and make a new country as terrorists. Specially after a century of colonization by european countries.
We'll see what they'll do. Perhaps it'll be wiser to talk then.

Firstly, Doublespeak is the correct english.

Now, the real stuff. Orwell was only one man, and one man's opinion isn't much of a basis for judging another's statements. I for one found it quite easy to understand.

Terrorist = scum = must die

Simple. Besides, we all know which other world leader is a fan of simple words. Mayeb he used simple language so it would cross the Atlantic ;)

Actually I was refering to this: http://www.resort.com/~prime8/Orwell/patee.html

Newspeak is a different thing altogether - almost the opposite end of the spectrum where instead of bewildering people with long and pointlessly complicated sentence structure and words it seeks to get rid of *all* the fluff words and anything which the Party disagrees with.
