I know he's a demilich now, or was before we kill him, but what classes was he when he was a mortal man? I think you have to be some sort of mage in order to become a lich but did he have other classes?
How did the 3 liches come about with the ring? It's like a god(ess) set all of it up in some way to keep someone from getting the ring due to it's great power?

Just another random thought floating around in my curious head.

He was most likely some sort of archmage. There is no lore concerning Kangaxx short of what you can read in the ring's description. The Netheril mages imprisoned him, then became liches to watch over the seal for eternity. That's all there is to it.

Kangaxx's name is probably a reference to Gary Gygax, but like keneth said, besides what the liches guarding his bones tell you and the ring's description, there is no lore whatsoever on kangaxx, who or what he was before becoming a lich, let alone what class(es) he was as a mortal.

Yeah, in all likelihood a homage to Gygax and his evil dungeon mastery genius.

It's been around since original D&D. Not a homage to Gygax (since he wrote the supplement it appeared in) but maybe a play on words like Zagig Yragerne (famous mage in Greyhawk).

I think the developers of BG2 came up with Kangaxx however, never seen that name anywhere else.

Well, Gygax used many variations of his own name for character names. If it's that old, it's probably just one of such derivations.
