I've been thinking about the timing of Donald Trump's trial and how it coincides with the primaries.
Why did it take three and a half years to bring him to trial? The election was in November of 2020. I understand that investigations take time, and I could understand if this happened in the spring of 2022 instead of 2021, but taking this long seems odd.
It almost seems they deliberately dragged it out and sat on things so they could prevent him from campaigning in the 2024 election by timing it to coincide with the elections.

Am I the only one suspicious of the timing? I can understand that maybe things were held up by COVID with everything shut down so maybe they would have had to do it in late 2022, but taking this long just seems strange.

I'm sure the timing is pretty important. He's got a cult following of uneducated people and Christian fundamentalists, who is believe whatever comes out of his mouth. It takes years to deprogram cult members but debunking his lies daily and bringing the real truth of his illegalities on a daily basis will open the eyes of some of the voters who are on the fence.

If they deliberately held it back until now, I think that they have a very poor understanding of Trump's followers. If anything, this has strengthened their resolve and firmly established him as a martyr. I doubt that it's going to convince many undecided voters to vote for Biden instead.

Note, I honestly don't think that the Biden dynasty is much better than Trump. It's beyond sad to me that Biden and Trump are the only choices for America for two elections straight. It's a choice between bad and worse at best.

It might be. For now, it doesn't seem to affect his popularity a lot. They could have seen that coming, he did al lot of undemocratic things without losing support from the voters, the contrary. If he will not be able to run for president because of it, it's a bit different. But in that case, it's understandable that they wanted to complete the trial before he is chosen to be a president because afterwards he would be invulnerable for another four years. So yes, maybe they hoped that he would not be running for president a second time because he didn't want to or because the Republicans didn't want to and when he announced to be running for president again and defeated the competition, they made more haste with the trials? From a European point of view, after all that happened, I can imagine that people consider him a threat for democracy.

What was worse, all the competitors to Trump bowed out of the race before more than half the primaries were even held. I think only between 1/3 and 40% of the electoral votes were in, so I didn't even get a chance to vote against him in the primary because everybody else had conceded before Illinois even had their primary.
Makes me wonder if the primaries even mean anything anymore if only 25% of the voters get to decide who is on the ballot in November with the Super Tuesday election, and anything after Super Tuesday doesn't count.

The Democrats were worse, there was nobody running against him on the sample ballot I viewed. At least Trump had other names on the ballot because they had to register long before Super Tuesday.
I'm not even sure if the Greens or Libertarians are fielding candidates at all this year. There's been no publicity.

It ever happen shat the running president (in het first term) is not chosen to be the candidate for next election, might explain why most didn't even try. Polls also showed they didn't stand a chance. I agree with Taluntain that it is a pity that you can only choose between these two guys.... an old men who somettimes stutters and forgets things.... and one who doesn't support democracy and fair election results etc..... and only between two party's as well.

Not quite true, although it hasn't happened since the 19th century or the implementation of the modern primary system.
    Here is some interesting reading.
    https://www.npr.org/sections/politicaljunkie/2009/07/a_president_denied_renominatio.html

That said, I am upset that I didn't really get a say in the primary because everybody but tRump had officially bowed out of the race before Election Day.
I just looked it up, it's not 1/4, it's 1/3 of the States that got to decide the election. Although it might be a little more because I think the numbers I got were for Super Tuesday alone, so it might be more like 2/5 of the States since I can't seem to get easy numbers for how many electoral votes were up for grabs before Super Tuesday. I'd have to go through and track down each primary and how many votes, then add them up manually and I'm too lazy to do the homework.

Yeah actually I read that article before I replied. I know it happened a few times long ago. I wanted to say it doesn’t happen nowadays.

I guess the other candidates wager their chances carefully and will stop only when they feel like they stand no chance. And the polls showed they didn’t have a chance in most other states as well.

I think the assassination attempt and his response just won Trump the election.

In my experience, for Americans, courage and the ability to show courage during adversity is more important than integrity and intelligence.

In that case I'm sorry they failed. I'm surprised he didn't wait until July 20 however because he reminds me a bit of a certain Austrian that get a leadership position in Germany that they attempted to assassinate on July 20 some years back.

That said, deciding who should be the next President should be done by going to ballot boxes, not going to your bullet boxes.
