Assuming you listened to what he had to say and went back to talk to the Helm guys, when you re-enter from the stairs outside of the keep summon a Deva when you get back in to help out. Haste everyone who doesn't have Boots of Speed. I had my paladin, Minsc and Sarevok rush down and with greater whirlwind started whaling on him as he summons those demons. Use your mages to throw pierce magic spells at the other demons. Otherwise they are tough to hit. By the time my whirlwind attacks wore off I had him down to "Injured". A couple more whirlwind attacks and he was gone. By the time he is defeated you should have the magic resistance of the others worn down to a level that will allow you to beat them. I think I lost Minsc in the battle, but I ddefeated him on my first try.

The easy way out would be to leave the Helm guys to their own devices after getting the "real" scroll from the ghostly apparition, but where's the fun in that? You miss out on the XP of killing him (100,000 I think). I'm not sure if there is a downside to defeating him since that isn't what you are really supposed to do, IIRC. I tried it both ways.
