I can't figure out how the heck to get into the portal that leads to the Underdark from Spellhold. I'm in a hurry and don't feel like trusting Saemon (good role-playing -- I'm a Paladin who will not be tricked twice by that snake!) but I can't figure out how to get to the portal. Any help would be most appreciated.

Get serious. You're not in a hurry and you need to punish Saemon as lawful you are. How about hang him on the ship? ;)
Let's skip spoiler about a nice bonus cloak you'll get if you don't go for the shortcut.

Extremist, you've forced my hand. I'm playing what I term a "speed game", which involves using the console to bring in all the weapons and non-plot related items (not to mention levelling up to the max) in an effort to see how long it takes me to finish the game. So no spoiler needed -- I already have the item to which you are referring :D

I've already played through the game several times, every time I go with Saemon. Just once I want to dive straight to the Underdark.

I've only gone with him once and that was plenty. Like you said, you can trick me once, but not twice.

If you want to go through the portal, you need to investigate his room. IIRC, this is the same room that you find his journal entries in. You will need to go down one level (where you picked up the other mages who helped you defeat Jon).

You need to find "Jon's Key". It's in that room on the right when you first enter the asylum... where Irenicus' journals, the horn of silence, the staff of thunder and lightning, and the stone golem are.

BTW I can't help but laugh when I hear Jon's key. It sounds like it unlocks the bathroom door! :D

(If you're in a REAL BIG hurry, just use the console to bring in Jon's Key)

I only did it this way the first time I ever played through, but IIRC...

The room with the portal is in the south-east corner of the 2nd Floor of the Asylum. The one where you have the big battle against Jonboy, with all the nut jobs fighting with you and Yoshimo has to fight you, etc. The first time I came through, the door to that room was locked. But, again IIRC, when you speak to Saemon and he gives you the choice to either go with him or take your chances in the underdark, accept the latter. Either he gives you a key, you find the key in Irenicus' study, or it just opens automatically. Either way, after you decline Saemon's offer, you should be able to get into that room somehow. But the first time I played, I was like you this time, not wanting to trust Saemon. It pissed me off when later I found out about the whole underwater city thing. Anyway, try that, it should work. If not, and since you obviously don't mind cheating this time around, see if someone knows the XY coordinates to that room. Or better yet, just teleport straight to the underdark using CLUAConsole. You'll warp in at exactly the same place you would start had you taken the portal.

    Hope that helps.

[IMG] Sahuagin City doesn't take that long to finish, so you should go with Saemon.

Sahuagin City has a great number of treasures that make the visit quite worth it:

    • Cloak of Mirroring - a great items - especially if you are going to do the Unseeing Eye Quest. It is far more powerful than the Shield of Balduran (if you have Throne of Bhaal installed)
    • Spear +3, Impaler
    • Cloak of Protection +2
    • Wave Blade (part of the Wave Halberd +4)
    • Rod of Lordly Might (sell it for gold)
