    [IMG] Well, it's out, we got a new pope - cardinal Josef Ratzinger, theological heavyweight, was elected St. Peter's heir during the conclave!

    Yes he was in the Hitler Youth - it was madatory at the time. He was also drafted in the German army later on in the war - again it isn't as if he had a choice in the matter. Neither seems to me to be all that relevant as to whether or not he would make a good Pope.

    I would think the more significant things worthy of discussion would be his strong conservative leanings and possibly his age.

    Compulsory, eh? Fairy nuff. Still, he must be the first Pope to ever be assimilated with a group that must have been more contrary to the catholic beliefs than anything else. Interesting stuff.

    Whatever anyway. What will this guy actually 'do', as such?

    <sigh>...<deep breath>...<sigh>....
    Already calmed down.....

    JSBB - I knew that. I agree with your post.

    Well, sorry for overreacting, but in few hours I have seen so many texts trying to offend new Pope...that most important thing about him is that he was a member of Hitlerjugend, or speculating what he was doing during WW II....sigh...

    I am much more concerned about his conservative views than what he was up to when he was a teenager....

    Truth be told, he needs to hold to conservative views doctorinally while still reaching out to those in need like his predecessor or else the Roman Catholic church could lose a lot of face. If he relaxes the church's stance on issues like contraception and abotrion or Homosexuality, then many of the faithful may feel betrayed. The Bible hasn't changed in thousands of years, why should the rules?

    Ah yes, there is a Benedict XVI now. My congratulations with the white smoke go to the catholics on this site.

    @Arendil.
    Sadly, people like bad news (I know I do). And the holy father is meant to represent something wonderfull in this words. The opposite of wonderfull is horrible. So you do the math.
