Are ranged weapons affected by points in "two handed weapon" etc? If so, is a crossbow or a sling 2 handed or one handed?

    Thank you

    A sling is one handed.
Jaheira has the fortress shield equiped when releasing her terrorizing rain of +2 stones while wearing the belt of 19 strengh.

I can't speak for crossbows since I never use them, but I would guess two handed.

And the two handed weapon bonus is for melee weapons only. But you do get the +AC bonus with the shield whether you have a melee weapon or sling. I least I think you do. Jaheira normally uses her spear in melee so I'll have to check that out. :book:

By the way, does anyone know the proficiency progression (such as per how many levels do chars gain a proficiency point)?

    For Fighters.

I think it's every four levels for thieves, five levels for clerics, and six levels for mages.

I have no idea for Druids/Bards, but I'd guess 5/4.

Warriors - starts with 4, then 1 every 3 levels
Priests (Clerics and Druids) and Rogues (Thieves and Bards) - starts with 2, then 1 every 4 levels
Mages - starts with 1, then 1 every 6 levels

    From here.

I have been wondering about ranged weapons and 2 handed or 1 handed proficiency points too. Can anyone confirm Aces reply?

I guess you can check by putting two points in the fighting style, rolling a 19 and seeing whether or not your bow/crossbow/sling scored a critical hit.

Ranged weapons ain't affected by any style, or at least it doesn't show up in your charactor screen :)

Edit : sling + shield is affected by the sword and shield style, but sling along isn't affected by single weapon style

Are your sure about that for thief?
    Is it different than BG1?

I thought Imoen and Nalia were being robbed a weapon proficency because they should have 3 (level 4 up) for thieves and 2 for mages (Level 6 up). Which means they should have 5, but they both start with 4. I went to BG1 and created a pure thief, leveled him up with gate keeper one level at a time and got a weapon proficency at level 4 and 8.

    On clerics (my bad):

I checked them too and it was at level 4 they get their 3rd point. My level 8 cleric finished with 3 points and I assumed it was because they get them every 5 levels, but it's because pure clerics are allowed only 3 points in BG1.

Like Minh So said, weapon styles have no bearing on the damage done by ranged weapons.

    Weapon proficiencies are as follows:
Fighters, Rangers, Paladins, Barbarians get 4 at L1 and 1 every 3rd level.
Thieves, Clerics, Druids, Monks and Bards get 2 at L1 and 1 every 4th level.
Sorcerers and Mages get 1 at L1 and 1 every 6th level.

That would make more sense as when you start a fighter you have 6 points to use at level 7, or is it 6 otherwise if it was just every 3 levels you'd only have 2 to start with...

If I got this right, anyone using a ranged weapon needn't put a point into one or two handed unless using a sling + shield?

Not quite, even if you are using a sling and shield you don't get benefits from points in one or two handed styles - just sword and shield style which is virtually worthless anyway so I wouldn't bother with any of them for a ranged weapon specialist.

Whoops, sorry, I only really play with warrior classes, I didn't notice anything different about other classes.
