Weapons for solo assassin

Discussion in 'BG2: Shadows of Amn (Classic)' started by The Amazing Ooopah, Jun 20, 2001.

  1. I've just completed the game for a 3rd time with a half orc fighter/cleric, and I thought I'd give it a go solo, as everyone else seems to be.

    I think the assassin class sounds like quite a challenge. So what weapons do you think I should use? I was thinking something which did additional damage after the attack (ie - Valygar's katana). My main tactic would probably be to get the boots of speed as possible. If I come to a powerful group (like the ones in the sewers), I'd set some traps just in front and out of sight of the frontline fighters. Then I'd go into stealth, backstab the mage, run like hell, and let the poison do it's work. If the fighters followed me, then they'd run into the traps, hopefully giving me time to get out of their sight and hide again. I'm open to other tactics though :).

    Oh yea, one more question. Do arrows have a strength bonus added to their damage? Because when Valygar uses his bow, with the hill giant girdle, he often only does 5 or so damage, when he should be doing at least 8 or so with strength bonuses.

    I think the answer would be pretty obvious, you should go for the Celestial Fury =)

    No, strength bonus doesn't apply to missile weapons except for the sling of seeking +2, only the proficency points you put in it counts:

    * (proficent) +0 to hit +0 to damage
    ** (specialized) +1 to hit +2 to damage
    *** (mastery) +2 to hit +2 to damage
    **** (high mastery)+2 to hit +4 to damage
    ***** (grand mastery) +2 to hit +4 damage +1 attack/round

    Well take the Gesen-Bow for Electrical Damage... And what about the firetooth dagger? 2d4+3 + firedamage (and the natural poison-damage Assasins do)

    [IMG] I agree on Celestial Fury. You need a great backstabbing weapon and that is it. Be sure to put one proficiency into Single Handed Weapon Style!

    You also need a blunt type weapon to fight golems. Flail or War Hammer are good for melee. Sling is good for missile. You also want Short Bow...

  8. Right, I've started him. Took me about half an hour to roll these stats (gave me a headache :p).

    Morgan, Halfling Assassin
    STR - 17
    DEX - 19
    CON - 18
    WIS - 17
    INT - 16
    CHR - 03

    The reason for the high wisdom and intelligence scores is for a reasonably high lore value, which should be quite useful.

    Proficiencies:
    * Long sword
    * Katana
    * Short bow
    * Single weapon style

    He's level 11 so far, and he's done Irenicus' Dungeon, the circus quest, and killed Mencar Pebblecrusher and his gang (which was surprisingly hard).

    I think it would have been much harder without Draw Upon Holy Might, which enabled me to melee the Duergar pretty easily (with the help of an Oil of Speed).

    [IMG] I found Kashiko´s wakizashi to be an excellent backstabbing weapon for it offers 1d8+3 damage, +3 on THACO and -1 wisdom when the saving throw vs. death fails. It´s speed factor is 0. I always overlooked it till now for there are plenty splendid longswords and katana´s around and for Jaheira can´t use it.

    My halfling mc fighter-thief Bragomil uses KW in the underdark now. I observed that some enemies go panic when he backstabbed them (though he didn´t cause that much damage; just about 50+). Seems to demoralise to loose wisdom :D

    Ooopah -

    For your next weapon prof. slot, may I recommend dagger? There are two (that I know of) throwing daggers that return to your hand and the poisoned throwing daggers don't stink either. I blathered on at some length about this in another thread (solo thief advice, or something like that).

    I thought the Pebblecrusher dudes were pretty tough (solo) as well.

  11. Yea, I was gonna put my next prof. in either daggers or staffs (because of the Staff of Rhynn).

    Right now I'm using a shortbow +2 (until I get tansheron's, and until I eventually get Gesen's) and a Katana +1. I'm saving all my gold up to by the hill giant girdle, so I may have a small chance of surviving in melee :p.

    One more thing, where is Daystar, I had it in my 1st game, but can't remember where I got it.

    EDIT: Just thought, where do I get the Robe of Mirrors (or something like that) that reflects spells and beholder rays? That'd save my furry little ass on many an occassion ;).

  13. [IMG] Uh oh, and there's a lich there too, right?

    [IMG] Just a really small lich ... don´t mind ...

  16. [IMG] I don't think the words "just "small" and "lich" should ever go into the same sentence.

    Go past him, pickpocket, identify and unleash the Sunray.. There be a good chance of it to be the last thing the lich sees in his undeath, and 22K exp will come handy

  19. UPDATE: Well, I didn't much chance to play BG2 yesterday, only a couple of hours, and I managed to complete the Slaver Quest. This gave me enough cash to buy the Girdle of Hill Giant Strength and the Blade of Roses (which means I now have a CHR of 20, which is quite a bit better than 3 ;)). So now, when Morgan uses the Blade of Roses, he has a THACO of 9, and AC of 0 (I got studded leather +2 of Haegan). He's also level 12 now, so I put his new proficiency into daggers.

    I'll post another tonight.

  20. UPDATE: Wow, I really surprised myself today, cos I managed to take out the sewer party. I went down into the sewers whilst I was doing Mae'Var's quest to get the Talos necklace. I killed the Rakshasha to get his Cloak of the Sewers (more on this later). I was passing, so I thought I'd give it a go. So I went to east of the party (where all the spellcasters are) and set up all my traps (3). Then I drank an Oil of Speed, drew upon holy might, poisoned my weapon and backstabbed the mage (the poison finished him in a few seconds). Then I ran down to where I'd layed my traps and hid again. The priest was killed by the poison in the traps, and I took out the archer with a critical backstab (120! :D). By this time, the other melee fighters and the remaining cleric had caught up to me. So I just ran off again, and carried on backstabbing them until they were all dead. This was made a lot harder by the fact that I kept running into groups of goblins and the occasional slime. Thankfully, I'd already taken out Roger's sea troll :). After selling of all their equipment, I got a nice sum of 22,000, which I used to buy some AC3 leather (aegar's hide I think) and the Mercykiller ring.

    The reason I wanted the Cloak of the Sewers so badly is because of it's polymorph abilities. When I've drawn upon holu might and polymorphed to a troll, I have a con. of 26 and an absurd regeneration rate. This enabled me to take out MaeVar's guild and come out unschathed.

    I'm just doin the guild missions now.
