Gems are to sell for money. You need money, don't you?

Books are to tell you about history, the races you meet, and the world in general (enrichment of gameplay), though I have found a couple of books with magical properties. That was a surprise.

Some items, such as Broken Armor/Weapons, can sometimes be sold for money (but only to specific vendors), and in one case can be used as a quest item, but may not be worth bothering with carrying around.

One completely useless item is simply the setup for jokes that occur throughout the game. Just because you've heard a joke associated with the item, doesn't mean that the item is "spent"-- so far I've hit 2 jokes about a particular item (I won't tell you what it is, but believe me, when you find it, you'll know that there is no way that it could possibly be useful or valuable) in two different stages of the game, and I know that there's at least one more joke related to this item near the end.

Calm your fury, the inventory space problem will be resolved in Chapter 1, during your first "away mission". Just be ruthless and sell what you don't need/can't use. And you might want to get the Ammo Belts and Bottomless Bags mod found on this page. Very useful.

Actually, since posting that, I discovered that the reason I found the magical books was because I was using the Weimer's Ease-Of-Use mod, one module of which allows you to include some Heart of Fury items in regular mode.

So the magical books I found are really HoF items, and wouldn't normally appear where I found them in normal mode-- or at least, not the magical versions, I think the regular versions are in the same place (Elythyrra's bookcases). This explains why it surprised me so much ;) .

But to answer your question, they were the books Heart of Winter, and Legends of Icewind Dale. Desciptions of their magical nature in HoF mode can be found at Unforgotten Realms - Heart of Fury Items, Books.

Sorry for the confusion. This is the first time I've used the Weimer mod, I've never played HoF, so I'm not familiar with the items, and since the books are the same, I really didn't realize that I just hadn't missed their magical nature when I encoutered them previously.
