The wife and i recently had an arguement over what is the proper toppings for a Hamburger and a Hot dog. Myself, being a Philly(Philadelphia) burbs kid, thinks a burger should get all the goodies. Cheese, preferably White-American but Muenster will do in a pinch, ketchup, mustard, onions, tomato, lettuce and pickles. Otherwise known as the works, maybe some hot-peppers thrown in for some fire. Hot dogs get the mustard, relish and onions treatment. My wife, being from the burbs of Chi-Town(Chicago), puts just ketchup on both. KETCHUP on Hot dogs???? Fries, yes, but Hot dogs? What do you put on you burgers and dogs?

Edit - By the way, this was actually a heated arguement with many "You morons from Philly" and "You hillbillies from the Mid-west" thrown in... for you single ones, just giving you something to look forward to in marriage!:D

If at home? Ketchup and cheese because I'm lazy. If it's in a restaurant bacon and eggs are pretty much guaranteed to improve any sandwhich type food. If available. Mayo is a good alternative to ketchup, compulsory if it's a chicken burger. I try to avoid American style hot dogs as a rule, though I suppose just ketchup if I had to have one. German frankfurters are a different story, though I'll take the judgement of whatever German is serving me them.

It entirely depends on where I am and what is available (caveat - I don't put cheese on these because I don't eat cheese).

I am perfectly fine with ketchup or barbeque sauce on burgers, along with lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, avocado, onions (preferably sauteed), mushrooms (definitely sauteed), hot peppers and/or relish.

On dogs, I prefer mustard, onions, and relish, although have been known to add other things. I will accept ketchup on dogs as long as the mustard outweighs the ketchup. I do not like kraut, so it does not go on the dogs.

I actually prefer sausages to dogs, as the taste is much better. I will not put ketchup on any kind of sausage. Honey mustard works well.

Ketchup and mustard on hot dogs. Onions and relish too if they are available, but those are the essentials. Chili dogs, however, are repellent in every way.

For the burger: ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onions (sauteed is nice), mushrooms (ditto), pickles and some kind of gourmet cheese. I invented a special recipe where I mix peppercorn, blue cheese crumbles and Lowry's seasoning into the ground beef before grilling. Medium rare.

A variation I love: same trick with the beef, sauteed mushrooms and unions, swiss or jack cheese and A1 steak sauce. Whole-wheat bun.

    Sh*t, now I'm hungry. Grumble. :(

I try not to put anything on my dog -- she has rather long hair and it can be difficult to clean.

On a burger I like mustard, ketchup (or catsup), pickles, onions, and pepperjack cheese.

Hot dog, tomatoes and mustard. Hamburger, tomatoes and mustard. Outside of those... sometimes sauerkraut and relish on the dog, while cheese, onions, and pickles get involved on the burger.

Burgers get tomato sauce, egg, beetroot, lettuce, cheese, worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, pineapple, bacon, avocado plus whatever meat is going to be central feature (beef mince, steak, lamb, chicken, or fish).

Daaamn, did you had the munchies when you thought of that or what? Pineapple? Avocado? Beetroot? :skeptic:

...back to the subject -- all burgers and dogs get the mandatory Japalenos. Along with hot sauce. And Tabasco-infused ketchup.

I only eat burgers from three places - Fudrucker's, Joe's American Bar and Grill, and from home. And I put nothing on them - a juicy, medium rare burger needs nothing more than a bun for deliciousness.

There's nothing the least bit unusual about any of the ingredients in that burger. A bacon burger always has avocado and pineapple in it. Even a KFC burger has that in it. Plus one slice of beetroot is in the KiwiBurger from McDonalds. There's nothing in my burger that you don't get from the big chain burger places.

Be that as it may, but it still sounds seriously weird to me.

There's a big difference of whether you are eating these foods in a cookout, or at a restaurant or baseball game.

If you're having a cookout (or attending someone else's), I'll just go for standard toppings on my burger - things like lettuce, tomato, onion, and whatever cheese is available melted on top.

Now, if I go to a burger place like Fuddruckers, that's a whole other story. There I'll have the bacon cheeseburger (Pepperjack) topped with mayo, lettuce, tomato, onions, banana peppers and jalapenos, with a dash of red hot on top. Unfortunately, some of these topping are typically unavailable at cookouts (and I have no desire of cutting up peppers when most people not like them for my own cookouts).

Onto hotdogs. If I'm a cookout, I usually keep it simple - just mustard is usually sufficient (although if there's chopped onions I'll throw a few of them on too). I don't like pickles, so relish is out of the question, and while ketchup is an acceptable mayo substitute on burgers, it is not an acceptable substitute for mustard on hotdogs.

Now if you're at a baseball game, there's no need to go with a regular old hotdog or sausage. There you need to get one slathered in sauteed peppers and onion and whatever else you can mound on top of it.

Hotdogs - just tomato sauce (ketchup I think its called in the US). Nothing else. Hotdogs in South Africa are just a snack, we never cook them over the barbeque. Some places do more elaborate hotdogs, but generally hot dogs go with tomato sauce. Some people like mustard, I cant stand mustard.

Hamburgers - lettuce, tomato, barbecue sauce and cheese. Sometimes onion but not usually. Optional but nice extras include bacon and avocado (bacon and avocado burgers are great!).

South Africa has a restaurant chain called Steers, which does a burger with 2 beef patties, onion, mayo of some kind, cheese, barbecue sauce, gherkins (pickles I think). its great!

The Gourmet Burger Kitchen in London is a restaurant chain that does the best burgers I've ever tasted. I dont know how, but they make them so nice I cant describe them. Easily one of my favourite foods ever. The meat is just.... I cant describe it. Its too nice.

I'll put just about anything on other than relish -- I hate that stuff! Oh, and tomatoes, of course, are evil.

My dream burger would likely have HP sauce, onion rings (or just onions if no rings are available), lettuce, crispy bacon, Montery Jack cheese, and sauteed mushrooms.

If no HP sauce is available, then ketchup, mustard and mayo.
