I've moved this here since it's rules-related, but you can find several discussions on it in the Whatnots forum if you make a search.

Basically it means 'elite', and comes from a hacker language once used to screw with the FBI or something like that.

Basically it's just butchering the English language by some people who think they're some elite because others can't understand them. However, the result is perfectly contrary since they simply use lame grammar and can't spell anyway. It doesn't take much effort to notice that every slang originates in a similar way - frustrated people with their desire to differ and liberate themselves - which unifies and uniformises them to a greater extent than the system they're escaping from for exactly those reasons. The real fun begins when some of them begin to be motivated by the need to climb without being motivated by the need to develop. Then you have those, excusez le mot, 'leets'. Saving their time writing at the cost of another man's reading, heh. Pitiable as it is, it's still a funny thing to observe.

Yes, I read an article about that recently. According to it, "leet" was developed in the early stages of computer-communciation in the 70s and 80s, to protect the "nerds" of that time from curious eyes, which wouldn't mind their own business, like the FBI. But since then, it seems to have developed to the language of the internet-games player.

And actually, I guess one of the other initial purposes was to show off knowledge, the "average" human being didn't have at that time, like 10 Pizzas, one with bacon and one without.
