What exactly is the "paper doll"?

    I've been browsing the board, and the debate of the BG1 paper dolls looking better than the BG2 paper dolls. One thing I'm confused about, are the paper dolls the representation of the character shown on the inventory screen, or the animated one that walks around on the game screen? I thought it was the former, but some of the discussions seem to point towards the latter.

    I believe it is just the former, but usually the discussion widens to include the animated 'avatars' as well.
