When would one need to polymorph self (or anyone else)? Are there any battle advantages etc?

Polymorph Self is one of those few spells that really has no battle advantages. When under the spell you can't cast other spells, so you're basically naked to enemy attacks. You could polymoph into a Fire Salamander (I think) and spit Fireballs. Other than that, it's pretty much a useless spell.

I use it to change to slime for it's 100% magic resistances. Good for fighting liches early in the game when I'm still low at LV(Wait till they used up all their spells and then kill them).

    Yep, Skywind has it right.
Mustard Jelly is the reason why you use Poly Self since you get 100% MR when in that form.
Spider could be ok on some specific occasions since spiders are normally immune to Web.

Polymorphing into a troll can also be nice at lower levels. For the regeneration of course. I've used it a lot of times...

I never waste a spell slot on this spell, but any item that does the job can come in handy -- the Cloak of the Sewers, for example, is great. I might keep the scroll for odd situations, or memorize the spell for XP, but it's not really that great a spell. IIRC, it's 3rd or 4th level. I'd rather use stoneskin or melf's meteors in either slot.

    Here's a question @ Daephon (or whomever)

If you polymorph into a troll, and you regenerate naturally as a troll, it would stand to reason that you can't be killed unless attacked with fire or acid. Is this correct, and/or has anyone tried this? Something I've always wondered. If true, it would be very handy in a pinch, especially for your protagonist or a mage.

That's an interesting question, DR. I would guess that once the protagonist is dead (0hp) that's the end of it -- like stone to flesh, even though a cleric in your party may have the perfect spell to do the reversal job, as soon as that spell hits the protagonist, it's game over.

I'm not sure about others, though. I doubt the polymorph will bring you back to life, though -- regenerative devices like the Ring of Gaxx don't seem to do it.

That's just it, though - technically you never die. There's no death to bring you back from. You lie there for about 10 seconds, and if nobody scores a hit with either fire or acid, you get back up again. I'm gonna try it this weekend and I'll let you know.
