When dealing with monsters, we see the word 'HD'. What does that stand for?

[IMG] HD=Hit Dice; I'm not really sure, but I think it is about the creature's hit points; and level. If you are a 10. level fighter you have 10 HD I think. Hey guys! Correct this if I'm mistaken...

Indeed, should be the level of for example the monsters you summon.

In AD&D Hit Dice measure the health or power of monsters and are the equivalent of levels with abilities and hit points.
1 HD is normally 1D8. A 10 HD creature has 10d8 hit points. For each HD a monster has the DM rolls commonly 1d8 for the monsters hit points. (Only for kobolds 1 HD is 1d4)

    HD also inflicts the Thaco.

BTW, I suppose this topics has to be moved to the D&D forum?

[IMG] It is a strange thing, being killed by the cloudkill spell instantly, umber hulks must have 6HD or less. But they have a LOT of HP-s around 75-80. Can it be because of the very high constitution?

Umberhulks must have a terrible saving throw vs poison I think. Basically it depends on the hit dice of umberhulks what happens to a creature:

-Cloudkill kills creatures with less than 4+1 hit dice immediately.
-Creatures with 4+1 to 6 hit dice get -4 on their saving thorw vs poison or they get killed either.
-Creatures with 7 hit dice or more suffer 1d10 damage per round.

EDIT: I fixed the typo, TiIN-MAN.

An addition to Ragusa's post: Creatures with 7 hit dice or more suffer the 1d10 damage/round I think. (Minsc in BG1 was level 6 and was killed by the cloudkill failing his save vs death.)
