[IMG] Right, this probably sounds like a very stupid thread but my parents are buying my little brother his high school graduation gift (an iPOD) and thye remembered that they never got me one 2 years ago, so they've asked me and I don't really have an idea and don't want to buy something just for the sake of it.

so... any ideas? I'm limiting it to USD $300 as the maximum price. The only thing that comes to mind is Sony's PSP but I'm not sure if I really want it.

Think of something you need then. Like something for the flat you should be moving out of home into.

Take a look on your computer. Something would surely use improvement. If not, perhaps you don't have a printer or a scanner. Or get a sword like a good roleplaying addict. ;)

I actually just ordered a replica helm just the other month already :D but not for roleplaying purposes. I had just read some historical fiction books and was into the whole "helm" thing and figured I could use it as a showpiece for my room and to psych me up before going to kickboxing :D

May consider a computer upgrade though. my 256 RAM is crap and my video card is pretty low tech :/

Get a better card, then a RAM chip. 256 is pretty low, but no matter how much RAM you get, it won't offset an old GFX card.

You could get a decent acoustic guitar for $300 and when you go down that road you'll never have a problem with spending money again. :D

With lots of free tab on the internet, you don't really need lessons and guitars are very cheap these days. I am self taught from magazines and the internet so all you really need is patience.

But it would be hard to beat a nice Turkish sabre! Someday I shall be the proud owner of one.

It may be easy enough to teach yourself how to play, but in terms of songwriting/music theory unless you've got a fair bit of talent it does help to be taught.

But yes, there are a load of good tabs out there so if you put in enough effort you could pick up the basic pretty quickly.

I've never got on with curved swords - prefer a good straight longsword anyday. Respect for katanas though :)

    @Sticker
At least it's not as bad as with bass guitars - something like £30 for a set of strings? Much harder to break them, though :)

Enagonios - my vote goes for a guitar! (Or sword!)

Something artistic or timeless. A ring with your initials for instance, or a musical instrument. A sword would do too, if you like. (But since I see swords as a sign of a certain geekness, this would not be my pick.)
Something that when you grow old, you can say you got it from your parents after achieving something. And it shows some sympathy towards your parents as well. A PSP or graphical card will be outdated sometime, and with it, you throw away your parents' concern.

    My 2 cents.

Yes Bass is much easier to play than normal guitar, playing an instrument is a great hobby which makes you feel like you accomplish something, unlike playing most computer games (though I still love them!) and evokes creativity. It even impresses the members of the opposit or same sex (whichever you prefer).

As for a sword, it is not very practical, but it is very desireable!

I wouldn't get just some commercial crap that had no meaning whatsoever to my graduation.

I can't remember what if anything I got for my high-school graduation. Either because I didn't get anything, or (more likely) it was just cash and other commercial crap.

For my undergrad, I asked for and got a nice Seiko wristwatch with the university seal on the face. That is something I will always remember and treasure.

Similar thing for my graduate degree, but it was a small desk clock rather than a wristwatch.

I've just realised that this thread is about finishing HIGH school. You're pretty lucky to get such a generous present. Over here, finishing high school is not celebrated as much as it appears to be in other countries (like in all those American movies where they do a speech and throw those funny hats in the air). When we say the word 'graduate;, we are only referring to completion of university. Maybe we should celebrate our education a bit more. Anyway, lucky you!

I got nothing from graduating highschool either!

I will feel let down if Enagonios picks something standard.

Given a $300 U.S. budget, I would say go for something somewhat classy that you wouldn't normally shell out the money for but will last for a long time.

In your position I would probably ask for a couple Waterford Crystal tumblers and a matching decanter. I have a set of tumblers and while I only use them for special occassions they look damned good displayed on one of my shelves. I keep meaning to buy a decanter to go with them but I never seem to get around to actually doing it.

My high school graduation present was a leather jacket from my university. I guess that reflected more of where I was going instead of where I had been but it was just one of those things that a first year university student wants. I am actually quite fond of that jacket and I still wear it over a decade later.
