What's better? Graphics or the story?

Whats better in a game? The gaphics or the stoy line/plot? This has been the debate bettween gamers from the begining. And may never be solved but for the sake of not over writing like i have been doing lately..., I think the stoy line/plot makes the game not the graphics. What do you think?

  2. Well for one thing, I totally agree with you... I mean look at Diablo 2: great graphics but what the hell is the point of the game besides search and destroy button?!

For me it's the storyline. I've played some really old games with crappy graphics but they've got a great storyline and easy gameplay which makes them better than many of the new games with fancy graphics.

Shadow, Diablo II appeals to powergamers as they can build up their kick-butt, kill all superhero. The storyline's ok the first time through but after that there's no surprises.

Bad graphics and good story is good.

Good graphics and good story is great!

And any combo with bad story is terrible, good graphics or not.

    So story comes first.

Here's the thing about graphics. I can't play fancy high end 3-d graphis on my machine(better be able to upgrade before NWN), but I can always play a good story:) So I say story first, graphics second.

But they are both important in my opinion, along with a myriad of other things that make a CRPG fly. Can't forget those thousands of points either.

[IMG] The story always comes first with me. In PST it was the factor that had me addicted to it until i had finished when it came out. The word addicted isn't too strong a word, i 'forgot' to sleep for a couple of nights and completed it over a couple of days off work. Damn that pay day being just before my days off.
The graphics are a bonus, and please no fun making at this, but the might and magic games had a half deacent storyline which wwas enough to keep my interest in them. The last two have been way too short though.

    Story.

I had this really crappy computer that couldn't do graphics and didn't even have 3D-acceleration (Yes. Stone Age. Can we move on?). So the story became more important. Now I have a really good computer that can pull off games really well, but I still want a story. I like to talk to people in the games if I can... It's fun.

I am an author and a reader (Unpublished, too bad) and in a game, when I play, it is the story I read thorough the game play.

    ARa
(Still odd and skipping... shouldn't do that... )

[IMG] A CRPG game is nothing without a good story. I can't play a game just because it is nice looking at. Graphics is just a bonus. And the Diablo 2 story is actually very good, if you ask me.

I think the 'stories' have it.

Grafix are nice. But like any good artisian, it takes a long time to develop them. Which due to Cash limitations, makes the programmers compromise *somewhere*.

But you have to have gfx good enough to be able to tell your story, or at least, be able to make out what the heck the characters are actually doing while you tell your story. I don't know if BG2/IWD would be the same if they were first-person-shooters...

Look at BG. No great graphics, but a great story. So a good game!

[IMG] Both. a story cannot exist anymore without the graphics. (unless you want to read) Graphics alone can not carry the game on its own.

You can't make me play a game in dos, even though the story is amazing. :)

And I won't play Diablo 6 made in a virtual world since I think the story.. uhm ISn't there :)

EDITED HERE: Gameplay is also important. it is a trisome

[IMG] Story, definitely! I personally don't even care about graphichs really...
A good story is something that will keep you playing the game and enjoying it for a long time. If a game has excellent graphics and a shitty story, then you will play for let's say an hour and that will be it.

I'll give you an example: Quake 2. It was considered one of the best FPSs mostly because of it's graphics. IMHO, there were much better and older games which had more charm and more of that "something special" which kept you playing because they were interesting, not because they were glimmering with graphics.

An example of an old but brilliant game is Daggerfall. It has shitty 360x200 graphics which was obsolete even when the game came out. But that didn't stop me of finding out that the game had an excellent plot, excellent conception, excellent "feel" to it...
And, yes Nobleman, that game is in DOS...;)

I totally agree with Nobleman. Who would play a game with a great storyline but graphic's like pac-man. And why should games like these be made. Game-developpers have the technoligy to make games very realistic and if they use that technology and also make a good story, you have a very good game. (With also a good gameplay that is, like Nobleman already said)

i put gameplay first, then story then graphics

if the game isnt fun, the story does little to redeem it

and likewise a game with just good graphics - you might as well just watch a CG slideshow

[IMG] :hmm: True Elendil. But I don't think I would play daggerfall if it was sold tomorrow for the first time. Simply because the graphics lack too much compared with BG games shooters etc. I know it is very noble and indeed appealing to stick with the idea that graphics doesn't matter. But I guess I am one of those who want to be amazed in all my senses. :)

To give a mental picture of how I see the comparison between gameplay, Story and Graphics/sound, is to compare which is most important to a dog: water, food and air.

I'm always in favor of gameplay over graphics. That's why I still like Quake :)
Of course, the optimal is to have both good gameplay AND good graphics.
I wish LucasArts would do a remake of all their old adventure games...

I second that motion to have Lucasarts remake a bunch of classics...
