What's the difference between Selune and Eilistraee? I was told they are two different goddesses, yet they are both called the Dark Maiden, and they are both moon goddesses...

 

They're completely different.
Selune if I understand it right, she is one of the two godesses who created... everything. And she is not the Dark Madein, she is sometimes known as Our Lady of Silver or the Moonmaiden, but never Dark maiden.

Eilistraee how ever is an Elvish godess. She is called the Dark Maiden. She is the godess to all elves and drows who wish to live on the surface in peace.

As you can see, there is quiet a differece. Either you have heard wrong, or someone has their facts crossed.

I don't see how Selune and Eilistraee are like Bhaal and Cyric at all. One replaced another one after he died. The first pair are both exsisting gods with different portfolios.

 

Eilistraee is not the goddess of the moon, though she does have a lot to do with it. She is the goddess of the surface drow, music, dance, and hunting.

 

IIRC, Shar is also called the dark maiden -- she is the twin of Selune, but she is evil through and through. She and Selune fight a never ending war. For those who play BG2, it is Shar to whom Viconia turns her worship when she flees the underdark.
