[IMG] People keep mentioning that London's terrible... Er, can anyone provide any arguments for this? Have any of you who think it's horrible actually been there yet?

I've been to London three times thus far and spent quite some time there. Well, I was based in London anyway, I've also been to other parts of the country and Scotland from there.

And I don't get it. I love that city. I could live there for a year and there'd still be things that I would want to see and experience.

I don't get it how anyone who has any appreciation for history can simply disregard London. Heck, I can't think of a single negative thing about London, minus the traffic problems & smog, but all major cities have that.

And it's funny really, most people that I talk to who are very negative about London have never even been there.

(I just realized how very similar this topic is to that USA one. :heh: )

    P.S.
95% of the food I ate in UK was great. The rest was mediocre at worst. So I don't understand the food comments either. You have every type of restaurant in the world in London, from Chinese to Indian to Pakistani or whatever.

I ate Chinese most of the time, because it's the cheapest, but it wasn't bad at all.

[IMG] London Rocks!!! I was there for about a week 2 years ago! I agree! I didn't see nearly as much as I would have liked. I apparently missed a nice aquarium there too ;)

I also spent some time in Wales, Chester, and the Scottish Lowlands around Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling - I had a blast! The people were very friendly (I was travelling alon so every day was an adventure), and I don't remember having a bad meal - despite all the jokes you hear. Mind you, I was also pretty adventurous with my choices...While I was there, I had boar & haggis!!!

London has a lot to see, a rich history, and of fun things to do. Now that I've thought about it some more - I want to go back!

[IMG] I have been to London. Not bad at all. I loved it. I can't see why it should be any *worse* than any other capital around the world. Who are all those London-haters Tal? I have only heard one mention London in a negative tone. And that is Sprite. I don't know if she hates everyone right now, so I'll leave it at that. But that is about all negative opinions I have from persons, face to face or rather here post to post. (not media or any other no-good second hand information).

I've had some good times in London. I'de tend to disagree about the food being good. I thought it sucked. The beer was good.

There are 2 wierd things, IMHO, about London. There is a lack of hot girls....and it is the only city I've been to in Europe where I had trouble understanding what people were saying.

  5. Its OK for you guys, if you're English and have to choose between 4 (!) channels, Eastenders can really get to you... :mommy:

Can't say I've ever really liked London, and the one trip I have had done there was a real let down. Admitedly I'm not much of a city person though. It also seems to get a lot more attention, especially seemingly from abroad, with the rest of England at times almost written off. Which is a shame as it has a lot to offer.

I love London. I was born there, and I go there often. It has no real disadvantages other than the fact that I get funny looks due to my American accent. I'd live there, and AM probably going to college there.

And, oh yeah, Yerril -- I live in Greece which is much less developed and if I get four channels, at least ONE of which isn't playing a brazilian soap opera, I consider myself lucky!!

London is a splendid place - all of the positive comments above apply and more, its great to be able to walk arouind and pop in on places that other people in other places in the UK/World have to make a special effort to come to see...

I have lived here for the past three years, and would never seriously consider living anywhere else...

Having said that, friends of mine have lived here and hated it . I thing there is a real double edged sword about all types of city living- its great in that you can walk down the street and no one cares what you look like, but I can see that it might gtlonely that no one cares about what you look like.... :(

The only negative things I've heard about London are the lack of good cheap restaurant food, and the dirtiness. Both were true when I lived there, but that was 15 years ago now. There are other things to love about London, of course- the history, museums, shopping.

Indeed Chris - London is a lovely place. A lack of good food still holds true. There's a lot of good food, but it's mostly expensive. The cheap food can really be incredibly bad.

    Oh and:

I agree about the girls (most of the time) and don't go to Scotland.

Heh. Presumably this thread has something to do with my turning the tables on Sir Poodle/Dargorn/Whacker in his "everyone I know hates America" post.

I was exaggerating. I've only spent a short time in London and have no real complaints about it other than those common to all large cities. Sadly, I didn't get to see any of the tourist sites.

London has too many building, too many people and too many cars. But then I guess I don't like big cities at all.

I've been to London once and I thought it was OK. There was a lot to do, it isn't that much different from any other big city. It is crowded sometimes, but that depends in which part of the city you are. If I will ever go to London again? I don't know, I don't like going on vacation in a big, crowded city (any city), I need some space to relax if I go on vacation.

  16. Tiamat - I consider myself lucky in that there is an off switch on my TV.

PS. London is nice if you're well-off, hell-hole if you aren't.

London is a great place but the people from there are all pretty common.....that is why the women are not fit. However down here in devon about one in every two women are very good looking....its the fresh air. plus in the summer it gets even better. The amount of fit women is proportional to the amount of sunshine.

    What most beautiful city award?

Hey Poodle, 1 out of 2 is great. I must visit Devon.

    And Sweden.
