By completely legal, I mean no mods, no XP cap removers, no illegal stuff, nothing.

What's the most powerful protagonist, along with (up to) 5 official Bioware NPCs?

I'd say something along the lines of:

R/C or F/M or F/T paired with jaheira(/Anomen), korgan, Edwin(/jan), Keldorn and Yoshimo.
IMHO either of the three protagonists would be equally powerful, with the F/T maybe being the weakest of the three on his own, but not paired with these guys (as he won't have to be able to take damage).

    PC-Fighter/Mage
    Minsc(SoA)/Sarevok(ToB)
    Korgan
    Jaheira
    Anomen
    Edwin

No theif, but none of the npc Thieves are too powerful - in the end its doable without one, provided knock is memorized and you have enough healing for your tanks to stomach the traps.

If I made all of them in a multiplayer game it would be something like: Beserker, Fighter/Mage, Ranger/Cleric, Ranger/Cleric, Fighter/Thief, Sorcerer.

Oh yeah, forgot about Saerevok. Would switch Keldorn for him in ToB.

i prefer to stay away from the wording "ultimate", because a lot depends on player preference - some people like to go melee heavy, others prefer heavy arcane, again other will go mixed or something else

as far as PC is concerned, take sorcerer - they start strong and by the end of the game, one single sorcerer is practically a party of his own

you almost definitely want korgan, edwin, viconia and keldorn in your party, they are the most powerful characters of their type

final slot is up to you, possibly jan or imoen when you get her back,so you have a thief and another backup mage - or, if you don't care about traps, you can take another fighter or whatever else you want

warning: evil people will leave if your reputation exceeds 18
warning 2: keldorn dislikes viconia and edwin, and they may come to hits if you let them be too close to each other

If you go the solo route sure, but in a party a Mage will, IMHO, be far more powerful than a sorcerer end-game.

    Multi Ranger Cleric
    Keldorn
Minsc (maybe replace with Sarevok in ToB)
    Korgan
    Edwin
    Jan (thief and back-up mage)

Although you'll run into incompatability problems (good vs evil)

    PC - Berserker
    Keldorn(replace with sarevok - TOB)
    Viconia
    Edwin
    Korgan
    Yoshimo/Imoen

The way I see it, if I take the already overpowered NPC's and throw in a PC tank that becomes immune to most negative effects - I'm good to go. Maybe even going berserker/cleric dual so I can wear the amulet of power.

    Sarevok (in ToB)
    Korgan
    Edwin
    Viconia (or CN Anomen)
Half-Orc F/T or Assassin (I think F/T is more powergamish)

Having only four in SoA allows for fast level up and getting HLA's quicker. I would add Jaheira as an additional npc if I wanted more firepower.

That's why the thread is asking for YOUR ultimate power party. I already know what mine is, I just like discussing styles and stuff. :)

I respectfully disagree. Read the article "Why Sorcerers Rule and Berserker>Clerics kick ass" article in the BGII downloads section of this site for my side of the argument. :D

    Anyway, I'd go like this:

    Elf Sorcerer Protagonist
    Korgan (Berserkers are INCREDIBLE!!)
Anomen (I like a Priest who can go into melee)
Jan (Best Thief in the game, great backup Mage)

I like the set-up of two tanks and two back-liners. I also dig 4 man teams because they're just easier to control for me, and they'll gain levels noticeably faster.

Two shorties means they'll rarely miss a saving throw, and Korgan's Rage insures he'll never miss an important one anyway.

This set-up also allows the best weapons IMHO: Protagonist uses the Staff of the Magi, Korgan gets the Axe of Unyeilding (and Crom Faeyr in his offhand), Anomen uses the Flail of Ages, and Jan uses the Staff of the Ram (in case I ever have him backstab) and the Gesen Bow when he's not casting a spell.

I'm having some interesting time with a Wild-mage/cleric (imported from bg1...legal?) backed up by Jaheira, Jan, Haer'dalis, Sarevok and Keldorn. What can I say, these guys kick butt, thinking about experimenting with Jan on melee and Sarevok as a F/T...Versatility, dual-wielding and micromanaging  is the thing with this group and these guys have a-plenty of it all.

Protagonist: F/M. The player's character should be somebody who can lead the charge, so to speak, and the F/M fits the bill. Good fighting skills, buffs, and extra magical firepower besides. Usually swords, axes and a shield. The axe proficiency is so he can use Azure Edge, and eventually the Axe of the Unyielding.

Jahiera. Another multiclass, whose druid spells make some fights a lot easier. She changes weapons more than any other character. She would in fact be much improved if she could use anything she can't use  but I always give her a shield and a sling.

Minsc. The giant strength belts can be used elsewhere, as Minsc doesn't need them. Get him Lilarcor early on, and he's all set well into ToB - immunity to confusion is priceless. He also uses longbows.

Keldorn. Near-instantaneous True Sight and Dispell Magic. Those abilities make him worth including even if he couldn't fight worth a damn, but of course he can. Two-handed swords and crossbows. Its just *so* convinient that you get the gauntlets of dexterity and a +5 xbow on the quest where you recruit him :) Oh, and he even comes with a set of armor you might as well leave on him all the way through the game.

That gives me two frontliners with shields plus stone/iron skins and other buffs, followed by two fighters who can use two-handed swords over their shoulders. That's all the melee power anybody needs.

Imoen. Not only is the story built around her, she's a good mage, and all the thief you need. Shortbows are a plus. Contrary to what a lot of people think, I prefer the Tuigan to the Gesen.

Aerie. Sure, she's fragile, but there are a lot of ways around it. I find her mage/cleric multiclass makes her the perfect support character. She can even melee if you want her to - buy her the Mauler's Arm, and she's at least competent. Its also a hoot the let her use Crom Faeyr

I'd say that's pretty much perfect. Although F/T are really powergamish as well. If you go that route though, you don't need Jan, and I would probably replace Jan with Jaheira, or possibly Anomen, although with Keldorn, Minsc and Korgan, you already have a whole lotta beef up front.

The only problem might be with Minsc and Edwin. Those 2 are going to get into a fight sooner or later. Better replace Edwin with Imoen at the first opportunity.
