Hey you guys, I've beaten the game several times but still am not sure what class to be, I like Conjurers (For obvious advantages of extra spells) and Stalkers cause i'm a fan of Drizzt and two scimitars. They both have their good sides in the game, but I wanted to know the publics opinion, so please respond back on your ideals of the two.
    -Thanks

  2. [IMG] Personally, I prefer theives. They are extremely powerful used correctly.

Assassins are good, esspecially if you like to backstab(X7 if you dont know) and poison ablity. - Plus if you plan to go onto ToB, there are some abilities that make assassins better, but youll have to go to the ToB boards to find out what ;)

Swashbucklers are good if you like the idea of Fighter/Theives, but not the "overpoweredness" of backstabing. They are able to specialize in every weapon that Theives are allowed to us, and can gain *** in Dual-Weilding(think pirate bucaneers)

Bounty Hunters are ok( I really dont like traps that much) they get very good traps if you like them and dont loose the Backstabing that most people like about theives. They also dont suffer that big of a penalty to theiving abilities

Then again, if you dont want to go for just a straight class Theif, you could play Dual-class, or Multiclass theives.

Fighter/theives personally Id opt for a swashbuckler, but one thing that a Fighter/theif gets that a swashbuckler doesnt is the backstab.

Mage/theives are really good they get the XP from unlocking cheasts, and disarming traps and for reading scrolls into the spell book.(there is an exploit that you can use with this, but only if you have ToB installed so no help there either;)) Mage/theives also have the theif weapon restrictions, so can use some *really* good weapons that are appropriate for backstabing if you wish to go that way.

Cleric/theives are an odd combo, that works rather well. Clerics get some really good spells, but the problem is a Cleric/theif is restricted to Cleric weaponry, which means no backstabing(realisticly anyway)

That pretty much sums up the basics of theives...

:hmm: I feel like im missing something here...

    Welcome to the boards :wave::hippy:

[IMG] DeBhaal has almost stated everything here, but let's see what can I add:
    • Swashbuckler/mage: Human swashbuckler dualed at lvl 10 to mage (15 Dex, 17 Int min.) good bonuses from the thief side (+2 to hit, +2 to dmg, -2 AC). Almost one man commando
    • Kensai/Thief: human Kensai dualed at lvl 12 to thief (15 Str, 17 Dex min.) Good bonuses (+4 to hit, +4 to dmg), outstanding backstabbing and if you have the unmentionable expansion pack these class becomes the dream of the powergamer ;)
    • Kensai/Mage: Same as above, (min. 15 Str, 17 Int), dual at lvl 12 and with right equipment(Robe of Vecna etc.) too powerful.

If you want to go for a straight class choose depending on what type of character you want:
    • Thief: Assassin or a pure halfling thief
    • Fighter: Berserker, Barbarian or Monk
    • Mage: the pure all around mage (there is already one Conjurer in the game why to make another?)
    • Cleric: Priest of Helm or Talos (Lathander's abilities are useless)
    • Paladin: I would go with the classic one but you can choose a kit if you want.
    • Druid: Avoid them, but if you definately want one then Shapeshifter or Avenger
    • Ranger: The pure original Ranger or Stalker (Archer is a good choice too)

    I hope I haven't forgot something :hmm:

And welcome to the boards

[IMG] I fear you guys misunderstood Vigilante's question! He asked for opinions on Conjurer and Stalker.

I have always played sorcerers whenever I play a single class mage (in BG1 I played an Illusionist once though) so I'm not familiar with Conjurers.
Stalker is IMO a great kit. To be able to sneak by the enamies and even backstab with a fighter type character is very powerful and the extra mage spells are really nice.
So, my vote is for the Stalker, just don't pick scimitars as your weapon! :)

edited: Thanks 8people, how could I forget that Edwin is a Conjurer. Silly me! I was so focused on the protagonist I forgot about him.

Edwin is a good mage and he is a conjurer, personally though I prefer Necromancers as I rarely use illusion spells

Stalkers are a bit like thieves and there okay, Valygars a stalker too isn't he?

[IMG] Yes, I usually use Stalker, but the reason I use Scimitars is because you can get a Scimitar Plus 5 in ToB, and just the way the swords look when dual wielded :). I like Conjurers though because they get that extra spell and everybodies favorite staff, "Staff of Magi". I really think ones decision is dependent apon many things, like party members, and classes and what races you want.
I love the stroyline of all the characters in the game, and Minsc is one of my favorite characters. I usually travel with Minsc,Jaheira,Yoshima(Then Imoen later on) Aerie, and then one empty space to swap characters to get al the side quests. Sometimes I get rid of Aerie though for someone else but I havent really thought about it. Alot of it adds up hen you think of ToB Powers, the Mage gets some wicked ones, while ranger gets the same as fighters.

Oh, yes Earl Grey you're right. I have misunderstood. Anyway, I must admit that i don't like specialist mages (imagine Edwin in a mage duel, will the 3 extra spells per level help him when I can cast: Shadow door and then Project Image? How will he dispel it? Dipel magic? Don't think so

Whatever BG2 isn't a real role-playing (like NWN) so a conjurer can be a good choice, but I continue to prefer the simple all around Mage or the Wild Mage :hippy:

Stalkers rock. 3 useful spells, good hide in shadows and good backstabbing. My favourite Ranger kit.

My opinion of stalkers and conjurers are that they are both good classes, but I don't consider either to be optimal. (I like sorcerers and ranger-clerics mc.) If I was going to solo and choose conjurer or stalker, it would definitely be the conjurer. If I had a group and wanted both, I would probably play stalker and get Edwin and his trinket.

Stalkers are pretty interesting, I think I will try one soon. However, I prefer invokers over conjurers, but that's just a question of preference in spells. The only thing I miss about the invoker is the inability to cast charm-like spells :D But who need that when he has more spells to blast/ fry his enemies ;)

I like the stalker's potential as a backstabber and his excellent stealth. Just take care how you team him since good leather gets rare to the end of the game. That seriously brought me in trouble when I created a party consisting of two thiefs, an archer and a stalker to try them out in ToB. A pity they cannot wear elven chain :(

  14. Mage/thief:Can use katanas and can wear armor with use any item.Magic abilities are good and with invisibility and tenses transformation(maybe black blade of disaster too)makes a rally powerful backstab.

Kensai/thief:can wear armor with use any item. With wirlwind attack and assasination you can deal out lethal damage. Can get proficent in weapons.

    Paddy!!!

[IMG] How about playing as some unlikely classes? Such as the Wizard Slayer, Totemic Druid (which isn't that bad), Undead Hunter or Skald? These are all good classes, try and see!

[edit] Is this 'Padine the MageThief' we see emerging? Heh, My Cavalier could beat your Mage/Thief anyday! ;):p[/edit]

  16. Not to nitpick Padine... ok maybe I do ;)

Mage theives can wear armor without UAI.. but not cast spells.
If a Mage wears armor he cant cast spells...
Elven chain mail is the exception :)

[IMG] Here is what I use...maybe this will help..
Fighter/Mage- I love the combination, and you can spell yourself up and run into battle, its a common mix but a reliable one.
Stalker-Overall good, I wish rangers could use weapons a little better....
Assasins-What can I say? Poison is good, but I really dont like solo with thieves, but mediocre fighter....
swashbucklers-they are my favorite thief, not my favorite one to use, but I good if you want a decent fighter who can pick locks with out having to multi class or duel class.
Sorcerer or Mage- My first solo! I just love the spell possibilities
Specialty Mage=Evocation-I am a battle Mage kind of person.
When I use a fighter, I never use wizard slayer, I like the magical stuff they cant use, normally I am a Kensai when I am a 100% fighter....
Oh! and dont under-estimate a Bard, ever, they have so many uses, some people dont use them right, I have friends who despise bards (but I duel them online and destroy their fighters :p)

[IMG] I've a little something to say about what padine said about the kensai/thief and use any item. I was recently playing through BG2:SoA for the cabillionth time as a human thief, then i said, screw this, can't play solo as a thief, so i used the shadow keeper to change to a mage, but since i had used CLUAConsole:SetCurrentXP("") to become level 40, i already had use any item. EUREAKA!!! a mage that can use anything and everything!!

[IMG] I prefer the Monk class.

I know that they can't wear armor, but the special abilities reall make up for that.
