BGI was the first RPG I Ever played and I have to admit I was skeptical at first but when I got used to it it just grew on me and I started to get addicted and that where the health problems began (you don't want to know) I don't know about anyone else but I always thought BGI was harder then II due to the big difference in power and some of the overpowered classes like the Sorcerer or was it the fact it was my first RPG ever and I didn't know what AC and thac0 meant?

BG was alot harder. Especially early on when even the toughest fighter you create has a starting HP of 14 and enough gold to buy maybe abit of splint mail  .

That first trek through having to fight gibberlings and even bears always gave me the willies, because if they hit, you were a gonna :p .

Plus, who can recall seeing basilisks for the first time? Initially thinking up a strat to beat those little beasties was a challenge

With BG2 unmodded yes BG is harder. Because honestly you start bg2 with all your chars at 0 ac, spells like stoneskin and mirror image at your fingertips and other powerful abilities (relatively speaking) to avoid death. In BG its much tougher to survive.

BG1 is a hard game indeed, however, after playing it three times, it has become very easy for me(you learn the solutions of the most important and hardest situations, you know the areas well).
Note: I always play according to True AD&D rules (difficulty level:3). When I started to play BG1, I was a newbie, so I chose 2nd (normal) difficulty level.
However, BG(+TotSC) always gives something new, no matter which time you play it.

In my opinion, BGII(+ToB) is easier (the game feeling is another question) than BG1, but the battle for the Staff of Magi against those creatures (Vampire, Beholder, Lich, ....) with a 10-12nd level party was not easy; or destroy Draconis without a Sorcerer...

Think BG2 is harder, When I equipped a party with 6 bows men I seemed to dominate most fights. Was able to finish the game without dying once without trying after figuring out the strategy. BG2 I have only finished once without dying, i seem to always lose a saving throw somewhere

BG1 is a longer game, so I guess that makes it harder is some ways. Also starting out at level 1 is a challenge (which I like!).

The Boss fights are harder in BG2 by far.
Darn Liches and Mages with their protection spells!
    Dragons too...

Those creatures are not little gibberlings indeed, but they are no trouble if you know the proper tactic. I talked many people who play hack&slash. If they prefer weapons to magic, that is okay, but without good tactic, they will encounter serious problems if playing in harder level than normal.

I've played BG1 many times but am making my way though BG2 for the first time. I'm just about to get to TOB. Facing the dangers of BG2 for the first time was/is something of a shock. The first time I had to fight a higher level mage I didn't have any Breach magic yet and he was killing my guys and I couldn't touch him. :(

You can not realy say which one is harder because BG can be harder because of your low starting level and no powerful magic and items, but BG2 can be way harder when it come to the types of creatures you're fighting there are so many spell to block/counter and instant death spells to avoid.

I think BGII may have a best order to complete all the quests in to make it it's most challenging though I dont know what it could be, maybe start with easiest and go to hardest or start hardest which would work for the first two or three challanges and then become too easy, so probably a mix of the two then.

I'd have to say they're about even. In BG1 you had less options available to you but you also had more powerful items (Arrows of Detonation) and no limit on the amount of summons you could bring in. In BG2 the game was more balanced but since you had so many options available there were a lot of cheesey tactics available if you were willing to use your mind a little to find them.

BG1 was definitely harder. With the number of options you have in BG2, you could probably do everything in a day at insane difficulty.
In BG1, you had to rely on luck 50-80% of the time, and there's almost no such thing as routine.

BG1 was harder, if only because the AI was so dumb it would not even recognice a barn-door from a donkey.

And the magical items, and magic itself, were a lot rarer -giving only a few ways to handle every situation (hack'n'slash gambling ;) )

BG1 what can I say about BG1, well beside my uncanny (and probably everyone elses ability to make Jaheria non-responsive, and me still having to beat it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, never. Yeah well I was all about just walking into the Iron folks place, and going to lay the smack down to me, but instead of Saervok there where I can beat him, or more precisely I could get one good shot at him, while the fighters of my group beat him. I ran into a bunch of peasents, so i got mad. Well I still have a saved game there, its been three years now. I hold grudges like dwarfs. So for the BG1 over BG2 discussion, BG2 had Jan Jansen, and hell any game with Jan Jansen takes the cake. I also assume it eats it too. Also sadly i have been playing Rps for a loong time, there was this company called SSI,yeah I used to play their games, darn I am an old Role Player. Oh how you all doing, names TheWanderingNomad, but you all can call me lok, and you all can email me at

I just love saying my email address, anyway
