Which one is better in BG2. Maximum attacking power or a more balanced attack defense combo?

I have not yet gone to the latest chapters but in early game, dual wielding seems to have an edge IMHO.

Custom barbarian with Flail of Age +3 and long sword of roses +3
Korgan (added one slot to two weapons style)with dual +3 axes (can't remember names)one with ice damage and one with fire damage.

Both fighters are awaresome attaking machines.

Two handed weapons are better because you have an extra attack per round.

I've found I like sword and shield and Dual wielding the best, byt that's more personal opinion than anything else(if only because my other characters deal out more damage than Minsc using 2 handed weapons). There are enough awsome weapons and good shields available by the end of the game to warrent either style. I personally use both. My Kensai/mage duals with Celestial Fury and Dakkon's Zerth blade, and my main fighter uses Daystar and a shield +5 I think with armor of the heart -2. I have no complaints from either. However, I'm about to forge Crom Fyer, so I think I might let my fighter dual that with Daystar to test it out.

The double attack for dual wielding is nice but maybe you should try to dual wield weapons with a low speed factor as fast as possible for maximum offensive power. Weapons like katanas, longswords, daggers, short swords and scimitars. For weapons like axes, hammers, maces or morningstars/flails, IMO it is better to use a shield for more balance. Of course, when you're using 2 handed swords, you should max out on 2handed weapon style.

be careful 'bout that 'double-attack' thing for you're off-hand EVER only get's 1 attack, BUT if you anyway have only 1 attack normally you do effectivly double your attacks. works with clerics, thiefs and maybe others except fighters.
at first I was delighted with my cleric dualwielding Defender of Easthaven and Flail of the ages (with THAC0-1 and AC-9), but soon I recognized my folly with my cleric wading right into battle, being hit (Golems, ggrrr) and unable to cast spells or retreat and shake the foes off...
...the second line is good enough for him right now...

I think that Improved Haste, the lev6 spell, double off-hand attacks.

Post number 100 here, hehe :).

[IMG] concerning the topic of x-wielding in itself to quote some wise man:

Hehe sure, I just looked at my Dwarven 18th Berseker, he uses a +3 Axe and Crom Faeyr, and he got 5 (4+1) attacks, so it should be 10 attacks with Improved Haste... well, I didn't try it... yet :). He has to wait for 9 levels to use all the potential of the Hammer, he only got 2 points in the Hammer spe, though he got 5 points in Axe and 3 points in 2 weapons style. He looks like a compact tank :D.
