Why do you play D&D?

Hallo we are three boys from Denmark.
In ´this week are we having schoolproject about Dungeons and Dragons 3rd edition.
And we would be very pleased, if you could tell us the reason why your playing D&D.

Why do I play D&D? Because is fun! I've been involved in RPG (Role playing games) which D&D maybe the most popular for almost 20 years. I enjoy the experience of sitting down with a good group of players and a quality DM for a adventure. Look at it this way. What is you favorite type of book? Do you like spy novels, westerns, science fiction or fantasy? Now imagine that you not just reading your favorite type of book but making the story. That's what playing D&D is like. You get to decide what happens. You have the chance to be the hero or villian. You have all the excitement of a good story topped by the thrill of being there.
Does this make sense to you? I guess you have to be there to understand. BTW what kind of project is this? For what subject? I'd be glad to answer more questions if you have them.

 

I just love it to bits. Always loved Elves and adventuring and magic and everything about it!!!

To escape from the harsh reality that is modern life.

But really, pick up the Player's Handbook and see for yourself.

 

The game is versatile, compelling, boundaryless and of course IT"S FUN!

 

As with any leisure time activity, we play the game of Dungeons and Dragons to escape reality, have some fun, challenge our minds, exercise our imaginations, and many other reasons.

As a child, yes I was a child once, I was drawn to the Fantasy/Science Fiction genre of reading material. The game of D&D, and many other games similar to it, allows us to become the main character in our own fantasy epic. The benefit of this kind of escape is invaluable in my estimation. We all need some way to escape from reality. For those of us who enjoy the idea of entering a world of magic, where anything is possible, the game of D&D simply is the best fit. This would include the many CRPG's designed using its rules.

It gives the opportunity to explore the world that books and imagination create in your head. Nowhere else in my life will I be able to drop from a tree, plunging my vorpal katana into an orc's head, except during a D&D session. I feel bigger than my physical body almost, and like I have experienced more from having played.

It gives me a place to flex my knowledge and interest in things that wouldn't otherwise affect my life. Like, sure it's cool to know alot about medieval weaponry, but in the game, I can really apply my knowledge.

Also, it's a great way to do something as a group activity, without the competition that usually comes with sports. We can hang together, as a crowd, with a purpose. We're not just sitting in front of the TV, or at a bar, or something. As a group, we're creating a world and filling it with people and adventure. Plus, I just love to play. I love the escape from the mundane it affords me.

 

Roleplaying means yo ucan play something else.... You just live your own life with it's good and bad things...

When you play D&D, you leave all that behind for a few hours. You play someone else in another world, another time.... Of course people that are interested in fantasy can experiency fantasy this way....

 

My friends got me into it. We fought for a room to play in after school. When we got it it went strong intell we left for high school. I never really drop out of it. I've been dreaming of something to put my ideas for D&D in or on to for long time. Finaly! NWN!!!! I like being the DM.

 

In the most basic sense, D&D offers you (and me ) the exact same thing as any other game or sport: the chance to 'play'; to have fun, in a manner we find challenging and exciting.

But, why D&D? For me, it's about being imaginative and creative. I am very much an introvert (don't worry, I'm not saying all D&D players are introverts), which means that about 80% of my life occurs in my mind. D&D allows me to express that part of my life with other people through roleplaying and DMing. I'm also one of those few people who actually prefers to DM rather than be a player (admit it - most people who DM started doing it because no one else would ). I like to build the story, and watch the players react to it, and make it their own. I enjoy building my own world, and seeing others take pleasure in what I've created.

I often think of D&D as an art form, both as a player and a DM: like music, writing, or any visual art, it's about expression, creativity, and imagination. The 'artist' not only enjoys the act of creation, but also derives pleasure in how people receive, perceive and interpret their art (I'm refering to the audience, not the critic). Thus, we have Sorcerers People come here not only for gaming advice, but (and perhaps even more so) to share their experiences. With PnP games, players are sharing their experiences immediately with each other, something which is much more difficult to do with CRPGs. If you look around the boards, I'm sure you'll find that the most long-lived and prolific posts are those where gamers are sharing their experiences (other than spamming of course ).

 

D&D allows DM's to create fantastic adventures from their own minds, their own ideas. Then they can challenge their friends and receive praise and thanks for providing such an amazing experience. D&D is fun!

 

Because it is brain exercise, it simulates the imagination and the brain in general.
It allows one to express their creativity and fantasy ideas.
it allows one to roleplay in a character and act as they might never in life, and to experience things they might never in life. How many owlbears have you slain or sent after people (I like sending owlbears after people).
And mostly because it is really, really, realy and lots of other reallys, fun!

 

Why do you sleep? It's the same sort of question, you just do it. Beleave me D&D is big fun, I play it once or twice a week. Thought I don't agree on it beeing like a sport, becouse you hardly get any excercise while playing (except from throwing your dice) I think it's better to compare it with a computer game, only D&D has much advantages on computer games:
You have a lot more freedom, becouse you aren't dependent on a few program statements anymore, but you can use your own fantasy and the DM will react on it and say if it's possible to do or not.
It's less lonely, you play in a group and sit with eachother, because usually the people you play with are your friends too.
D&D is a nice way to let your immagination flow, pretend to be someone else and do things you woldn't even think of in normal live. I, for example, prefere to play chaotic evil chars. but in real live my friends think I'm naive, becouse I'm nice to everyone and beleave everything that is said. And as a reply on the person who said he was introvert, and this was a way to express his feelings, he was right when he stated not all D&D players are like that. I think you can't see I'm a D&D-gamester, mabe you could guess it, becouse I'm a fantasy fan, but I don't behave very different from my class-mates. So don't think D&D-players are freaks! If you like fantasy and you like computer games you should really try this game.
