What is the benefit of having a pure fighter class in your party?

If you ask why to have pure fighter instead of some multiclass fighter or some other "fighter" type classes (by this I mean monk, barbarian and such) my answer is: you can have more feats with it.

But I've never played pure fighter, I consider that awfully boring. :)

Extra feats don't strike me as being a very good incentive, given that most of them aren't exactly ground breaking anyway.

I guess what I'm trying to do is see if anyone else agrees with the notion that other 'non-fighter' classes can outperform the fighter in every arena. Clerics, mages and even druids deal better damage. They are also arguably better decoys and even meat shields. Added to which, they have a host of disabling/buffing spells which fighter classes do not have access to.

You only ever "need" four levels of Fighter for the Weapon Specialization, and even that isn't really feasible for multiclasses besides Fighter/Thief due to the amount of lost focus on your main class. Until level 20+ is reached, that is.

We had a discussion about this a couple of months ago, concentrating mainly on the specialization feat but largely about the same issue.

Oh, that you meant. My opinion is that it really depends on your playing style and game difficulty. By playing style I mean how often do you like to sleep and do you like to summon a lot.

On hardcore difficulty I found monk to be pretty strong, often almost untouchable. In HOF mode he wasn't really good.

And about that sleeping and summoning I mentioned: if you like to sleep often and have no problem with summoning then I have to say that I don't see really much point in figher type classes.
(Summoning can even be ignored in what I said, but sleeping can't. Because mages without spells are not that strong. ;) )

My first party had two Deep Gnome fighters with a sword and board. There's something to be said about having party members you don't have to fuss over. (Although with ECL+3 and my game unmodded starting them 5000xp away from level 2 made the prologue and chapter 1 rather difficult due to low HP.)

The extra feats are nice to have when you're just starting out with the game and have no idea what weapons are available.
