Why pancakes?

    [​IMG] Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras). Traditionally (at least from my pov), this day meant pancakes. Why pancakes? Why put money in the pancakes?

    Monday was Collop Monday named after the traditional dish collops of bacon and eggs, the fat from the bacon was saved for tuesday.

    Shrove (or Fat) Tuesday was named for two reasons it is traditionally the day a person is shriven before Lent. Shriven is a process whereby one confesses one's sins and is forgiven for them.
    Pancakes are traditionally made because this day is also the last day you can use Fat or Cream before Lent, the easiest thing to make using fat and cream was pancakes.

    I've never heard of money in pancakes unless that's associated with Maundy Thursday.

    I've heard (my family was too poor) that people put dimes in pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.

    I've never heard of that, kuemp. I know it's traditional to put money in Christmas puddings but I've never heard of anyone putting money in pancakes :confused:

    Here, traditionally, we have doughnuts on the last Thursday before Lent and a party on the last Tuesday, traditionally ending at midnight.
