I am planning on buying this notebook. It is not one of the best around but it is so cheap and will be enough for me. But I wonder if BG games can be run on it, I do not have any experience with notebooks and I have heard that they could cause trouble with IE games like IWD-BG-PST.

    Here is the confguration:
    MSI VR330
    NVIDIA C51M & MCP51
    AMD Sempron 3500+
    Screen:13.3" / 1280x800 / WXGA
    Graphic Card:128MB
    RAM:512MB 667Mhz
    HDD: 80GB 5400RPM 8MB
    DVD Dual
    linux operating system

Can i run XP, I don't think linux will work fine with IE games.

    TIA

That's well above the recommended specs, so it should have no problem. I'd use xp, though any overhead caused by an emulator should be minimal (as the game doesn't use much resource wise to start with).

I used to run BG1/2 and IWD1/2 on a pretty old laptop - I reckon it had 256 MB RAM and a... 32 MB card? or something like that. It worked without a sweat. It was on Windows 2000.

However, I fully support the evil empire myself, so I have no idea how things go on Linux.

Not to just repeat what others said, but I played both games (and ToB) for long with the computer we got in 1998. And it was quite mediocre even back then. So yes, unless there's some conflict with it being a notebook, it should run them.

    BGII System Specs

Windows 95/98 with direct 7.0 or higher
    Pentium II 233 or faster
800MB Hard Drive space for installation
    32MB Ram
    DirectX cerified Soundcard
    4MB DirectX certified video card

so like Stu said i think you'll be fine

but im not familiar with Linux, thats my only query.

IVe run BGII on a PC and several Notebooks, and it worked fine, but i did have Windows XP on them.

You should avoid some mods however. SCS will be causing lags as will the summoning cap removal mod from SimDing0. Probably also IA.

    Hmm thanks for the clarification!

Shaitan, are you sure that IA and SCS will cause lags? Why and is there a workaround? They are my favourite mods you know. :)

I'm not sure, it's only a guess. SCS has some very heavy scripts (and the scripts in SCS2 doesn't get smaller) and IA has some battles where monsters are a-plenty.

Lol you ask for a workaround, it would be a better laptop. But you can follow the instructions at IA's forum for "older computers" and for SCS you'll have to let the scripts run ie when entering a map, just wait until the lagginess is gone.

[IMG] I see. If it is system configuration you suspect, let me tell me my current old PC in which I play IE games.

(Ladies and gentlemen, please try not to laugh too hard. Thank you! :) )

    P3 799
    64 MB RAM
    40 GB HDD
    32 MB TNT2 Graphic Card

See. :p I had some lags in BG1 Easy TuTu (which is related to SCS, I think, nothing game breaking though, I managed to beat game twice.) and regarding IA, there were no serious slowdowns in entire BG2 which was very suprising and cool! (ofcourse I had some graphic and other options turned off, but hey!)

So this laptop will be a very serious upgrade to me, as you can see. :shake:

I learned that it also comes with all drivers for Windows XP in a CD, so Linux won't be a trouble much, yes?

Computer and software are so very expensive around here, and this one is extremely cheap and on sale. It will be enough for a college student like me, I think. For preparing my homeworks and papers, searching and net-surfing, MSN, watching DVDs, playing music, and the occasional sweet-sweet IE games, most importantly BG1 and 2 ofcourse! (I have no desire to try all new computer games of today) so all in all, do you think this lap top is OK for me? I may order it today! (so...excited...)

 yes well even on my relatively new (compared to yours) laptop 1,6 GHz with 1 GB ram IA and SCS sometimes makes my games lag a bit :)

must be some specific with those mods or whatever, ive never used them and i never lagged.

even on a laptop from 95 with 2GB hard drive space, i had to do a minimum install just to fit BGII on it, but it didnt lag.

yeah well, I would avoid a minimuminstall given that your HDD is 40 GB.

How well would BG2 play on a laptop with a 250mhz pentium with 96megs of RAM and a 4gb HD?

BG1 plays well enough on it. I haven't used that laptop much in years, but this thread has perked my curiosity. According to Elfen Lied's post, it would run, the question is how well?

Normally I wouldn't post but would just try it out, but I'd have to free up some disk space on the hard drive to try. Not to mention how long it would take to install with a 4x CD-ROM.

 I got my notebook PC today! I am writing this on it too! It is just so swell! I will get my BG CDs from home tomorrow and if they work (hopefully they will) I will be the happiest person around here, no doubt! :)

I got my CDs today too. I installed BG1, ToTSC, BG2, ToB, Easy TuTu, and also my long mod list.

Tada! My games work fast and wonderful and it is great to have all options maximised in the game!

I feel so happy now, and hopefully won't have any problems. Already started a Easy TuTu game! Thank you for your ideas and support, people! :)

just being able to play BG is pretty cool, but playing BG with some friends is better.

nothing like you and several of your closest friends chowing down on the meaty marrow of evil soul stealing wizards

@Silverstar: I've been playing BG2 on my laptop through VirtualBox emulator on Ubuntu for quite a while now.

    Here's my impressions:

Its really CPU intensive, because of the emulation layer you have to use. Also, its a bit laggy when I play, probably because of the software emulation of your graphics subsystem.

But its certainly playable, for me atleast.

However, here's my lappy config, for your reference:

    P4 3.2 GHz with 1 GB RAM
    100 GB IDE HDD
ATi Radeon 9800 256 MB RAM

Its a bit old...but it plays the game okay...

I see. Yours is far superiour to my humble notebook, no doubt.

I have Windows XP right now, the notebook came with all the drivers needed for Windows so it was no big trouble.

I can play BG games with 3d acceleration enabled. Fog of war never seemed that..beautiful! :) Downside is all waters look green now in my TuTu game, I know there is a fix for this but it is too late, I have tons of other mods installed already.

Hmm I had a trouble which might concern yo more than processorpower. I had a overloaded override folder. I had too many mods installed and thus making my BG2 game lag horrible. So let this be a warning: More mods than necessary is not recommended. How many that is is up to you to decide.
