Wizard spellselection feedback wanted =)

    Okay, so I'm going to play a Wizard5/Incantatrix3 soon, in a 3.0 game. I'm still not sure about my spell-selection, so here goes.

    The feats I have to augment my spellcasting are: (in which I can still switch, but I'm trying to shoot for Archmage. I plan on taking spell-penetration feats next levels)
    - Spellcasting Prodigy (Arcane)
    - Spell Focus (Evocation)
    - Spell Focus (Transmutation)
    - Empower Spell
    - Energy Substitution (Sonic)

    My spellselection is currently:
    Lvl 1 - Featherfall, Spiderclimb, Enlarge, Shield, Hold Portal, Magic Missile, Protection from Evil, Alarm.
    Lvl 2 - Protection from Arrows, Invisibility, Flaming Sphere, Blindness/Deafness
    Lvl 3 - Dispel Magic, Haste, Protection from Elements, Fireball
    Lvl 4 - Otiluke’s Resilient Sphere, Stoneskin, Polymorph Other, Dimension Door

    I wanted to have a fair share of spells that require different saves, so I'm relying on transmutation spells (blindness/deafness and polymorph other) for Fortitude saves, evocation spells (flaming sphere, fireball, otiluke's resilient sphere) for Reflex saves and once I level up enchantment (domination) for will saves. Aside from protection spells for pretty much every situation. :)

    Currently I'm looking for something that'll be usefull against critters with spellresistance, just so I have my bases covered. Of course, there's the various utility spells to have too, and as far as I see the only thing I'm missing is a form of Fly. I suppose I could spare some money to scribe that into my spellbook. (finances are pretty tight with my equipment of choice, I currently have roughly 1000gp left)

    Suggestions?

    Problem with dudes with SR is that most spells that would hurt them can be blocked by SR.

    In that respect, I would recommend spells that boost the party, or can potentially boost the party, by say learning polymorph and turning your fighter into a Treant or something and give him some silly bonuses to his Str and Con so he can dish out the damage.

    Problem is, is that I play a v3.5 spellcaster (who coincidently is going for Archmage as well :p ) and i seem to have disposed of my 3.0 PhB. Needless to say, I can't remember whether certain spells are in existence in 3.0 or what the changes are.

    Other spells that are useful for buffing all members of the party are the mass bull strength etc sort of spells.

    A good spell to get your Will save requiring spells working is Mind Fog which, if they fail the will save, get -10 to Will saves ... or wisdom, i can't remember which. However, to be most unhelpful, again i can't remember if its in 3.0 or whether it has an SR factor.

    Maybe the Bigby hand spells may be of use?
    I personally havn't concentrated on Enchantment of Conjuration spells (think Bigby is Conj) as they're the opposed schools of my Necromancer (whom I've been playing for 3 years)

    Anyway, I hope that what little advice I have provided helps. I'll post some more if I get any more ideas :)

    Oh yeah, good to know that your going for spell penetration :)

    Bigby is evocation, but (in the 3.0 PHB) has no spells below level 5.

    Mind Fog incurs a -10 on wisdom based checks and will saves. I'd cast it only on creatures with high wisdom/will saves, because for creatures with low will saves, you won't need it anyway. The interesting thing is this: It allows a will save. Cast on a creature with high will saves (which you want to lower), it has a decent chance of faillure, as the creature has a good chance to get the save.

    I like the spells chosen, Faragon. Though I'm not a big fan of Hold Portal and Alarm, I think you fear for interlopers?
    What about Aganazzar's Scorcher iso Flaming Sphere? Evocation, level 2, and reflex for half damage. I always get the idea that flaming sphere will set the entire nation on fire.
    Or what about Snilloc's Snowball Swarm? (Don't reject it just because of the name :p ) Evocation, level 2, reflex for half damage)

    Howabout Flesh shiver? (5th Necro - FRCS)

    Stun them no save? Round after they must make a fort save or lose 1d8hp per caster level I think? Problem is that its only a single enemy and can still be defeated by SR

    Still, pretty nifty for fighting against mages so that you get the definete edge by stunning them lots

    Can't find Flesh Shiver in the FRCS.

    Aganazar's does more damage in one round, but with a round/level and 2d6 per round, Flaming Sphere is higher damage and better range. Unless you can get foes to line up like crazy :p

    Snowball Swarm ... how about no? :p I will indeed reject it just because of the name ;)

    I am considering picking up solid fog or web.

    Okay, my updated spell-list:

    2 Protection from Arrows, Invisibility, Flaming Sphere, Blindness/Deafness
    3 Dispel Magic, Haste, Dragonskin, Fireball
    4 Evard’s Black Tentacles, Stoneskin, Polymorph Other, Dimension Door, Scrying*
    * scroll scribed into spellbook.

    Only thing I still see is having another spell instead of stoneskin perhaps. Though, I suppose, I could help the tank out with those when really needed.

    Well, Faragon, I have 3.5, so I'm sorry if this advice doesn't work, but my method for dealing with spell resistant enemies is to summon a monster tough enough to smack them down, or to keep them busy while I try to get a spell through their protection. I like summoning ;)

    Wish I knew what an Incantrix was, though :(

    Look up Magic of Faerun :) It's a prestige class from that book. (Basically, a metamagic specialist.)

    I suppose I could add Summon Monster 4 to my spellbook, but with a druid in our party, I think the summoning niche is covered :p It is a good suggestion though.

    Just found Assay Resistance in Complete Arcane (+10 on casterlevel checks versus spellresistance against one monster) which might be worth taking. I'm planning on taking Spellpenetration at 9th level.

    I am also considering Polymorph Self over Dimension door. It is more versatile.

    Polymorph self is a good spell for certain things, but I'd never use it to change into something for combat purposes; I'd use it for long distance travel or sneaking around.

    I like Dimension door because it lets you bail out of nasty situations -- fast!

    Dimension Door seems wonderful.
    I want to get on the other side of the river, but I can't swim. Poof!
    I want to get on top of this building but I can't climb. Poof!
    I am being pummeled and need to get out. Poof!
    Someone else is being pummeled and needs to get out. Poopoof!

    But then... You can do all of that with Polymorph Self, too. I have the feeling, though, that polymorphing into some other creature has often some nasty disadvantages.

    Polymorph also adds the ability do all those things for as long as a 1 hour/level duration, wheras DD only allows it in one round.

    I don't see any disadvantages to Polymorph :) Though, the new shape does require a will DC 19 to prevent getting a -2 to all saves/checks/attacks because of not being used to your new form. But with a +13 willsave, I doubt that'll be that much of a problem often ;)

    Also, polymorphing into something tiny or inconspicuous to be able to spy/sneak is a nice addition to my abilities.

    I guess at lower levels Polymorph can be pretty cool, but once I'm high level, I prefer to use whatever gear or spells I've got to kick but, not morph into something weaker (in BG2, polymorphing just removes your ability to use your cool weapons, an especially tough blow for Jaheira)
