[IMG] Here's an article that I saw on the state-controlled Saudi-Arabia newspaper. I'm posting it since it demonstrates the difference in culture and world view between the Middle East and the west.

In this article, a Sheik (a tribal leader), defends an accusation that he supports a woman's right to drive.

I'm going to slightly threadjack here, as I read an article today talking about Shiite Sharia and relegating women's rights in post-Saddam Iraq to the clergy rather than lawyers and judges. Thus, issues about custody, divorce, etc. in Iraq may wind up being decided by clerics. I'm not sure how significant this will turn out to be, but, were I an Iraqi woman, I'd probably be dusting off (or applying for) my passport.

I was raised in the USA, never had any formative years outside of the States and cannot really grip the overriding mind-set that women need to protected/kept/whatever by the men that seems to be so prevalent in the Middle East. I think it's institutional chauvinism that would make Archie Bunker proud.

Warning - Sarcasm ahead - My God! Little Mirza wants to drive a car! I can just see it now, she'll hop into a hot little red miata with the roof off, the wind will whip off her burka/hijab/abaya, her hair will fly free and the next thing you know, there will be a 14 car pile-up as all of the men in the area rush to her with either massive sexual desire or the idea that she needs to be put to death. What's worse, if she escapes she might realize that she's a human being too and that she's being seriously oppressed. Next thing you know, she might talk in public and punch holes in all of our religious rationalizations of why she's a second-class citizen. Better kill her now. Thus, not giving her a license is really saving her life. . . .

(Really :yot: - Blackhawk, saw that Mavs-Kings games this morning. Dude, your boys need to play some D! All I have to worry about is Shaq coming back from his annual "injury" vacation and Maone healing up.)

As I understood this church-jurisdiction is very vague provided for in the constitution. With the potential to have no real meaning or be pretty important. Time will tell. It's a democracy, you have to appeal to the voters and sub-groups.

As for the cultural difference. Can't see it. I can see a time difference, but not a cultural difference.

On a related note. You have to stop it before it really begins. Today they drive cars, then they won't obey they male-relatives, tomorrow they want to vote and soon you end up with women becoming priestesses and preaching in churches. That may even end up with allowing gay-marriage. Shudders. There goes the occidental ... ahm ... oriental civilization.

This is hilarious. It really is.
I have been on a party yesterday. The women were mostly.. err lightly clad :D - and there was absolutely NO corruption there. No destruction whatsoever! Not even rape, murder  nor did the women take undue advantage of us poor men or turn us into rampaging savages or something.

Either all men were gay (ye know, those mental deviants  ) or some chauvinists use what they say is best for society as an excuse to exercize power. For there is no reason I would know of that women should hide from man's eye. Other then the need of some idiots to feel superior and in charge, of course, by denying the weaker something, like driving a car or walking ungarded and recognizable as a human being across the streets.

Oh well, some people have it all wrong.
