Game Instructions boasts an article entitled Women in gaming, and women's game conferences and divided into two sections labelled The alienation of women and Leveling the playing field, nailing down the problems women face in the gaming industry and as players. Here's a snip:

However, these conferences send mixed messages. Drawing attention to the notion that women and games is an almost aberrant combination is damaging. It is not an effective way to fix any existing problems or even to continue the forward momentum of any improvements that have been made. In the mindset of the women attending these gatherings and the gaming community at large, it only further ingrains the idea that women are an ‘other.’

Furthermore, these conferences, which could be seen as ‘estrogen pep rallies,’ can only alienate the male members of the gaming community. They set females apart as standouts in gaming when they need to be focusing on normalizing. They claim to provide women looking to get into the industry networking and mentoring opportunities. This can be beneficial for female attendees – but paradoxically can be interpreted as an acknowledgement of inferiority, weakness, and incompetence, not to mention the paradoxical creation of ‘the girls’ club.’

If you're interested, you can read the whole thing at Game Instructions.

An interesting article. How does one find that line between expanding interest to females without alienating males or seperating females?

Maybe the best way would be to just forget about gender and target gamers as a whole.

Guess this answer is too simple for the brilliant minds of developers administrators.

It's extremely funny how the author keeps inflating her language like a balloon to make herself sound more competent (see the first paragraph) and finally graces us with a "most anyone." Highly, highly amusing.

Wow. She's just discovered America again. Is she going to make millions in the games business now?

Be nice, Chevy. :) She may be stating the obvious but the many of the game developers or those who finance them seem to have forgotten it or never knew it.

As far as getting women in to game developement my gut feeling is don't push it. Those who find it of interest will break down the barriers.

Devolopers shrunk Lara Croft's breasts as a desperate attempt to get more females to play their game.

EDIT (maybe this link will work):
    http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=47147

I don't play the Tomb Raider games because they suck, not because I'm offended by Lara's giant chest

Changing games (or creating entirely new ones) to appeal to women is stupid. I like video games, and I'm a girl. Imagine that.

Hmmm... I think I know why I've liked the recent pictures of Lara better than the previous ones, then.

Great. Just leave the legs alone. ;)
