I see on his level up screen he can dual class to fighter. Should I do this and if so is there a particular level that would be optimal? Thanks for your time.

I would not do that. It is fairly counterproductive to dual class to a fighter as part of what is great about dual classing FROM a fighter is the benefit of good hit points and fighter THAC0 that gets reactivated relatively quickly. Dualling to fighter just makes him a low level fighter for a while and prevents him from ever advancing in his thief class ever agin, which is what you want him for.

Keep him a thief, it will work out for the best.

You might want to dual him to a mage right before entering Spellhold proper. Have him pick Infrivision and Friends while picking a weapon style such as two-handed fighting instead of a weapon proficiency. Good alternate spell choices are Chill Touch and Sleep. As for equipment, just give him a normal staff or dagger and don't worry about bracers, rings, or amulets.

If you've played through Spellhold before, you'll have an inkling why. If not, I won't spoil the surprise.

You can't dual Yoshi into a mage afaik. Perhaps in a mod?

    Edit: can't.

Confirmed - Yoshi's intelligence is too low.

Yoshimo gets *very* good at hide in shadows, move silently and find traps, especially when equipped with some stealth enhancing items you will find. As such he can scout out enemy positions unseen with almost 100% efficiency which is really useful in the early game when you are weaker and have to make your party's spells and abilities count to prevail in tricky situations. His ability to spot for your mages unseen so they can land some nasty spells on unsuspecting enemies is worth a lot more than any increase in melee ability from dualing to fighter would give him IMO.

Most importantly with Yoshimo remember to boost his set traps score as quickly as you can afford (the only skill I might upgrade 1st would be open locks if I was going to get annoyed about missing treasure but even then I still think set trap is better). Those traps are a quality resource that can literally solve encounters for you. For instance you see a dragon that has not gone hostile but you know it will soon. If you surround it with traps the dragon could be nearly dead at the start of the fight no joke.

Also special bonus is that unlike standard traps his special traps can be "thrown" (as in you can set them from a distance). You still can not use them when there are hostile creatures around but if you scout around you can find the enemy, get out of sight range, and then set the trap on top of that group from far away.

Yoshimo is brilliant as a thief so definitely keep him that way (by the way I also agree that detect illusion is way undervalued however it needs to wait until you finish set traps and open lock though it is an excellent third skill to boost).

Like stated, Yoshi is a Bounty Hunter and does some really awesome traps. Very useful and a good Thief too boot.

Yup. It's your first play-through, so I would not get unduly complicated with any of the characters. Keep them all in the condition they come to you, you can tinker on subsequent runs.

Well it depends on your team... Do you need a great thief to be an average fighter or...? Yoshimo is best used as a thief - when you get to Spellhold thing might change. But until then - keep him as a Bounty Hunter to get the most out of him...
