To gain entrance to Abazigal's Lair, you must get past his most trusted servant: His son Draconis.
With a name like that, you have probably already guessed that he is a Dragon. Don't be disappointed when you see him.
Here is where you arrive in the area. Before advancing, you'll want to put up your defenses. Protection from Fear, True Seeing, and plenty of defensive measures come to mind. You may also want to have a Wand of Spell Striking at hand to rip down Draconis' defenses.
Here is Draconis. At first he looks like a puny mage. But he knows some nasty spells, and once you kill him, he reveals himself in his true form as a Brown Dragon.
As a Dragon, Draconis has some nasty abilities in addition to a Dragon's normal abilities: He is very liberal with his Wing Buffet, his breath can cause severe Acid damage to a single character, and he will often make himself invisible and either pounce on an unsuspecting character or sneak off to heal himself.

"So it has come, my raven. I'll leave this foul partnership and it shall be as if we've never been accquainted. Try not to trip over yourself as you continue your dreary way, aye?" -Haer'Dalis, Baldur's Gate II
