On your way to Highcliff, you’ll find Lizard folk attacking travelers. You can Bluff or Intimidate some of them into fleeing. Gera and Zachan give you their thanks yet again and you’ll get an experience point reward.
World Map Transition.
Here you’ll find Elder Mayne. He gives you the lowdown. The Lizard folk have attacked Highcliff and have forced most of the residents to flee.
Here you’ll find Eldario and Rand. They don’t have any merchandise to sell however because Highcliff has now become very dangerous to reach.
Here you’ll find a wounded Lizardfolk prisoner named Vlssk. The first time you speak to him, it becomes apparent that he’s wounded. How your companions react to this state, if at all, depends largely on their particular moral compasses. Casting spells or using skills on him won’t do anything.
You have to talk to him for a second time and select the ‘patch his wounds’ dialogue option. You can now get some information out of him. You should be able to clue in that shadows, minions of your ultimate enemy, have deluded their Chieftain into believing that Highcliff was once their ancestral home and that they are now engaged in a conquest by right.
Here you’ll find a Lizard folk blockade. They’ll insist on you seeing their chieftain. It will be gone once you deal with their chieftain one way or another.
Approach the Lizard folk guards around this area and you’ll be taken to see their Chieftain, Batha. When you talk to him, his being manipulated by the King of Shadows into attacking Highcliff becomes clearer. One thing is inevitable, combat. This can be pretty involved, because he’ll start off with a number of protections, including Elemental Shield, can cast spells, is assisted by a huge elemental, and can dish it out pretty good with that spear of his. Take out the elemental first. Have somebody cast Greater Spell Breach on him as well. Once you cut him down to size, he takes on a huge Earth Elemental form. Continue to cut away. Once you defeat this second form, he calls for a truce. You’re presented with two options: killing him or talking him into allying with Neverwinter against the King of Shadows. If you go with the former option, he and the remaining Lizard folk will commit suicide and not leave anything behind. I find that convincing him to join requires making a substantial Diplomacy check and acceding to his request to read your mind. If you fail the check, he and the others suicide. If you succeed, you’ll get 1,000xp. He’ll also give you a Fey Spear +3 and a Grey Robe of the Archmage.
Bring the good news back to Elder Mayne so that the remaining residents of Highcliff make it to Crossroad Keep.

"Well, now, this is a fine turn of events. I haven't led a party since...well, since Uncle Scratchy turned sick with the pox and put me in charge. He just didn't trust the dwarf, you see. Hmmn...hopefully, this time works out better than the last..." -Jan Jansen, Baldur's Gate II
