That barbarian level is only when he 'becomes' the Hunter.

He was stalking around Underdark for quite a while, decending on nearly animal level. Kind of another personality (as salvatore calls it "Hunter") that allowed him to survive alone with Guenawyar (okay, i'm sure i spelled this wrong. His panther anyway).
So based on the books that barbarian level is certainly justified.
There's another version of him, being a pure ranger. I suppose this is drawn from Montolio's description of him, since he says something like "You've been a ranger all along, you just didnt know it." I dont agree with that, since he most surely had no contact with wilderness of Underdark until he was an acomplished fighter of greater skill than other drow. Pure fighter levels, no doubt about it. He might've had the mindset of a ranger though, i agree with that, but it still doesnt justify having Animal Emphaty as a ranger.

His mental stats are pure exageration IMO. True,he's smarter than average and during his six month training in Sorcere he was described as very intelligent and able to become a wizard if he so desired, but 17?! Most mages dont have 17 int and yet they develop it as they go along. I'd give him 13, 14 at best.
Wisdom is hard to evaluate. Again 17 seems too much. He has some instinctive feeling of what is evil, but that isnt so darn hard to determine if you just take a look at gnolls. Perhaps his rather quick adaptation of mind from bling hatred to surfacers to accepting them contributes something as well. Still not 17 IMO.

I'm cool with it, seriously! I just reacted a little strongly, that's all. Besides, I'm not a huge fan of giving stats to everything - if it has stats, it can be met and killed, and in my experience people just want to say they've killed someone famous.

Just betraying my PnP roots.

    And my criminal tendencies...
