I think you're reading too much into my meaning. My comparison wasn't meant to imply that a prostitute is just as good and respectable career choice as being a doctor, lawyer, prefessor, etc. Further, I wasn't trying to imply that prostitutes were professionals like the other careers you listed. I'm not even sure the term professional can be applied to a prostitute, because I do not think you need any special training to sell sex. If anyone was to qualify as a "professional" sex worker, I think it would be more appropriate label to place on exotic dancers - at least a level of athleticism is required for that stuff, so not just anyone can do it.

That said, I agree with what you are saying. However, even if you were to consider it a very low skill job, that does not necessarily mean some are not more skilled at it than others. Low skill is not the same as no skill, and I maintain that anyone can perform a basic skill better if they have done it before than having never done it previously. In the case of a sex worker, I don't think the learning curve is particularly great, but it's there.

Well of course it wouldn't make an impression on you, because you are a very ethical and moral person, and not some egomanical pervert who would be turned on by deflowering a virgin. I don't consider myself a pervert either, and I am a faithfully committed husband. But even in a hypothetical situation where I was single and had money to burn and in the further hypothetical that I would be willing to spend that money for sex, I wouldn't be interested in the virgin.

Why are any of these relevant? I've worked with a former nude dancer -- and it was quite possible she dabbled in prostitution -- it did not affect our work environment or my opinion of her professionalism.

I dated two of them, but I didn't marry either of them, nor did I seriously consider it. One I worked with, and there were many snide comments made behind her back. I would not say that those comments were fair, (since I did date her briefly) only that society exerts a kind of pressure on us all. We can debate whether that pressure is "good" or not, but there is no getting around it.

Edit: Let me turn that around a bit, rather than ask such a direct question. Does being a nude dancer limit career choices? For instance, if a school teacher dances in the evening or the weekends, should the school she teaches at be able to fire her? Is it right that dancers are blocked from such a career? Even though they may have "danced" while they were in college?

As far as I'm concerned, what the girl is doing is wrong. Period. End of discussion on that facet of the debate*.

Yet, as Chev mentioned, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone." I'd be the world's biggest lying bastard if I tried to make it sound like I've never done something that was wrong. You guys'd be surprised. I know I sound judgemental and vicious sometimes, and I would say that the first is true -- all of us make judgements on issues. But I'm not vicious. I don't think that it is my place to come out and say that this girl should face any punishments from anyone, because she hasn't broken any laws. I would argue that her punishments will result naturally from her actions without any effort from human agents. For example:

Chandos mentioned the difficult conversations she might face later in life. I argue that her conscience will likely sting her later in life. Certainly some of the people who know her will view her differently. That may be judgemental of them, but that's a far cry from doing something to "punish" her like cutting her tires. She can reasonable expect that people won't do crap like that to her, but she cannot reasonably expect people to refrain from forming an opinion on her, to be euphemistic, "unorthodox" choice.

*meaning that no amount of moral relativism could ever convince me otherwise, not that I see my opinion as being the end all and be all -- I may have mental problems but a God complex is not one of them.

Those are good advice on parenting - I shall try to remember it when I spawn DMlings.

But you haven't answered my question, though that's probably my fault since I phrased it badly. Let me try again. You said you were surprised at DR's moral subjectism; so what point of view did you initially carry? In this instance (and in general, though to a lesser extent), I would be surprised if people weren't morally subjective. In other words, I'm surprised at you being surprised at DR.

(I suspect I might have missed the point of your post...)

If we base our decisions on what career choices we may or may not limit ourselves to, we start to see serious flaws. For example, I studied chemistry so that limited my career choices -- I'm not a physicist or biologist ... or geologist ... or psychologist ....

Sometimes our decisions do specifically exclude career choices. I could go back to school and study those courses to shift careers. Just as a nude dancer (or prostitute) could give up the career, go to school, shift to a new town, and take up a new career.

Talking about colorful aspects of your past life opens you up to ridicule -- that's just the way life is. I've been verbally attacked by co-workers because I was military, I've had people say fairly rude jokes because of my Mormon background -- but it was my choice to reveal those facts about myself (just as it was your former dancer co-worker's choice).

To me, I don't see why "what are you going to tell people years from now" is a valid argument. It's simply ridiculous. There are aspects of anyone's life they will never reveal. There are things which may embarrass one person, but have no affect on another. This woman may be proud of this for her entire life -- we don't know and any assumptions of 'what will the children think' are pointless.

You can never project what you will be talking about "years" from now to "other people." Regarding what this particular woman will be "telling the kids' years from now, it's a little late for that, since she and her actions are already all over the internet and the news. CNN will take care of the "telling" part. She can deal with the explaining part.

DM - I'm not ignoring you, and I will spend some time explaining my point in detail, once I can devote more time to it. But atm, the kids are keeping me very occupied.

I just thought of something. If she REALLY doesn't care about the possible ramifications of this, she should not only sell her virginity, but she should have it videotaped and make a porn out of it! If she sells the rights to that as well, she could easily double her haul. Lots of girls do porn videos to make money when they are young, hers could just have that extra special, uh, cherry on top. (Uggh, I can't believe I went for such an easy shot. I'm going to hell for that one.)

Will a porn movie rake in enough extra cash to offset the probable loss of revenue from the auction? I reckon a lot of guys will be less interested if they know that their "efforts" will be filmed, so the price for her virginity will go down.

To be honest, I remain convinced that this lady isn't really looking to use the money for grad school, but to parlay this into something far more lucrative. When all is said and done, whatever she gets for her virginity would likely pale when compared to what playboy, penthouse, hustler, et al will pay her to pose in their magazines without having to have sex -- let alone have sex on film -- with another stranger. If she plays her cards right, she'll only have to lay on her back for 5-30 minutes the one time to be set for life, so I doubt she'll be agreeing to do a film version any time soon. Ironically, a "celebrity" (infamy and fame seem to hold the same value for this type of thing) posing for a gentleman's magazine tends to earn far better pay than a porn star earns doing a film. The porn industry pays its "actors" a lot less than one would think.
